Its not just who is a "better" guitarist -- as in who has the best technical ability to play the guitar. If it were we'd all know Buckethead as a household name. Better yet, Mr Clapton is held in high esteem due to the overall contributions -- as a guitarist, for which he has been a part of through out his career. Which is to say, legendary. View Quote Every bit of this is true. Nevertheless, as great as he is, he's overrated and there are greater. "Fame is not the same as geatness". - I dunno, Oprah or somebody. |

Clapton is my guy. My favorite musician of all time. I own just about everything he's ever released. I don't think he's the greatest guitarist ever, just the best musician.

Gilmour- love watching his live videos. The guy can nail an amazing tone with his solos.
EDIT: page is overrated. Zep was more a sum of the parts. |

Nothing wrong with EC, but Robin Trower is the best in my book.
David Gilmore is great also. |

Here's another lesser known player with phenomenal skill:
Andrew Latimer. |

And re Clapton, to this day, "The Core" played on big Cerwin Vegas, puts everything in its place. (p.s. all the guitar collector nerds have assuredly seen the famous picture of Eric with an original run late fifties Explorer, coiled wired to a Marshall stack - that man is indeed guitar and music history) Here it is - an essentially priceless original run Explorer: http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae29/littleredman888/ericEx2_zpst3c1doqg.jpg (those are perhaps MusicMan heads and cabinets) View Quote I've held that guitar in my hands. A friend of mine sold it back to Clapton for one of the Crossroads auctions. I was trying to buy it when he got the phone call. I was out bid. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I'm going with Knopfler.
He makes it look effortless. But Clapton is pretty frickin' good. |

I was gonna say... He was on stage with Clapton at Knebworth and it was obvious who was the master. Not sure if he's from UK but Prince also is in a higher field. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

When Clapton plugged in a '60 Les Paul into a JTM45, history was made with the Beano Album.
That tone is what blew peoples minds at the the time and still has guitarists searching for to this day. Sorry guys. Staight up technical ability there is better yes, but as a guitarist and pioneer in rock music. Forget about it. |

Dave Mason for all-around better musician than Clapton. View Quote Damn This thread is bringing out some good memories Gallagher, Trower, Townsend.... I just saw Mason last summer at a free concert here in CT, one of my bucket list items. This thread is now about great British guitarists. I don't know how you can rate or quantify quality. It seems these kind of threads are based in taste, era, or genre. I like them all!! |

Clapton is not overrated.

First, I am a great fan of srv.
I have seen many great guitarist over the years some in their tip top prime. I have also seen some great guitarist that have never made it big. Eric Clapton on his 1990 journeyman tour was one of the greatest total showman I have ever seen. Eric Clapton thought that srv was his better and said that srv was one of several who gave him competition to better himself. On that night in 1990 E C was the best guitarist, even better than srv or Eddie van Halen in his 1976 prime but more than that Eric Clapton Has been playing at such a high level for so long with such a variety of work it is just insane to think he is not one of the very best if not the best. His work with Cream alone is enough to tell the tale. |

I give you Chantal McGregor just check her out on YouTube (sorry can't embed for you). Yes I've seen her live, she looks about 12 yo.

I have the DVD of The Strat Pack: Live In Concert. I enjoy the whole thing, BUT Gary Moore's Red House and David Gilmore's Marooned are enough to make my head explode!!!
Many of my personal favorites are listed in the replies. I loves me some Rory! |

I'll throw in Robert Fripp.
Most of ARFCOM will not appreciate Brian Enos 70's "Glam Band" style, but listen to Robert Fripps guitar solo on the Baby's on Fire song. Start at 1:29. ETA: I forgot how to imbed youtube vids. . I guess disregard then. |
