So the GFs son is graduating from basic next month and we are going to be there. Already have the passes, hotel etc. We are bringing our dog, a 13lb MinPin. So, will he be allowed on post? Do we need to keep him at the hotel (off post)?

You can. Some posts have bans on the breed of peace and other "bully dogs" your dag should be fine.

You should contact Ft Jackson and ask them.

Here's a place to start looking:

Most pet friendly hotels will NOT let you leave pets in the hotel unattended.

Don't bring the dog.  Graduation ceremonies are no place for your lap dog and they last too long to leave the dog in the car.

Even with family day, it's a 2-3 day trip max... just leave the dog at home.

Legal perspective, most posts require dogs to be registered to come on post.  They want proof of vaccination, etc.  Whether or not the gate guard will follow through on any of that is another story.

I went to a cousin's graduation at Jackson earlier this month and saw people with dogs there.  I don't think it would be a big deal on family day, but it's getting to that time of year when you can't leave them in the car by themselves when it comes to the graduation ceremony.  If you were willing to have someone sit with the dog outside of the ceremonies and when you go to restaurants (local and on base), I think it will be fine.  It might be more trouble than it's worth, though.  Part of my cousin's family rented a cabin on a lake about 30 miles to the north of Columbia, so I imagine that might be an option too (if the rental agreement allowed pets).  Best of luck.

Don't take your dog. I am not saying don't take it to graduation. I am saying when you load the car and leave, leave the dog at home. The person graduating basic should rightly be the focus of your time. If that dog is there, you will have to make dining, sleeping and shopping plans around a dog.

I love my dogs. I also love dropping them off at the kennel.

I haven't been to Jackson since I graduated basic in '85.

However, I have to say, get a damn kennel.  The dog will thank you.

I practically live right next to Ft Jackson, it's a nice base and area. I wouldn't bring the dog to the ceremony though.

You should get the dog a ACU uniform to wear when you bring him.

Option 1 - Take the dog to the ceremony and if the dog gets anxious or agitated around a million strangers and strange activity it'll detract from the ceremony.  A lot of potential activities and stops will be off limits because you can't take a dog inside or leave it in the car.

Option 2 - Leave the dog in the hotel room and if it get's anxious and starts barking it'll ruin someone else's stay and the management will probably end up calling animal control.

Neither of those options will end well.

I remember back in the day, eons ago, when I graduated Ft Jackson - we were all Whiskey rotor pilots and MI.  I guess times have changed.
