Wow, quite a heated debate here. I've made the SS payout probably 10 of the past 12 years by working assloads of OT (doubt I'll hit it this year since they keep raising it), but I'd still happily let the SS system die so I can keep more of my money now. I want to be the one making that money work for me, not rely on the government to do it.
