My girlfriend is from the Matabele tribe. I showed her my two FAL's and she had an immediate, negative reaction. She was sort of ho-hum about any other gun I showed her. She was 10 when Mugabe took over. Anyways, liberal democracy is always the best answer and I wish the Rhodesians could have practiced it better.

Democracy has proven itself to be a poor answer.  Majority rule in a place where the civilized part of the populace is in the minority is a horrid idea.  As it was, the Rhodesians achieved majority rule while excluding terrorist groups from politics, but that was not enough for the British.

My Grandfather made that choice in May of '61. We fled Cuba and came to the US.

Zimbabwe is known for institutionalized racism. But what about all the blacks who served in the Rhodesian forces? How were they treated when the commies took over?

Taken from one of the Rhodesian vet groups

Ken’s death in action on 17 May 1977 will always have a permanent place in my life, for more than one reason.

One of the injured in that grenade blast was my brother Jo’. The grenade literally exploded between his legs, flinging him through the air. Shrapnel perforated his stomach and bladder, and gouged large holes out of his inner thighs. To this day, his legs are still full of shrapnel. But the roll had been called: a small piece of shrapnel behind his ear claimed Ken’s life, and by the Grace of God, my Boet miraculously survived.

The date and detail about Ken’s death was my first contribution to a roll of honour spreadsheet Adrian had started, and as such, the start of what today is, for me, a full-time occupation, dedicated to ensuring that the history and lives of the men and women of Rhodesia’s armed forces from 1890 to 1980 will not be forgotten. Only on Friday, I discovered a large archive of previously unseen BSACo documents from the 1890s to 1923.

So to Rfn Ken Pittaway, thank you for your legacy, which I cherish and protect. Your spirit lives on with all of Rhodesia’s fallen.

In the photo, Ken is on the extreme left, with Lubbe, van Niekerk and another member of H Coy, 1RR

They were not even given a proper disbandment. The SAS were allowed to disband.

The white population of Rhodesia never exceeded 5% of the total population. In the long term, white rule was unsustainable.

Anyone have an estimate on the total number of Whites in Rhodesia at peak civilization?

Anyone have an estimate on the total number of Whites in Rhodesia at peak civilization?

The Southern Rhodesian African population had grown from some 600,000 souls in 1890 to 3,860,000 by 1962.  The white intrusion in 1890 had numbered 212 men of the Pioneer Corps escorted by 500 men of Cecil Rhodes's British South African Company Police, and had reached 220,000 in 1962 and had declined because of political and economic uncertainty to 210,000 by 1965.  In addition, there was a small Asian population of 7,400.  Asian immigration had been stopped in the 1920s and then relaxed in the 1960s.  There was also a slightly larger population of 10,900 mixed race people, referred to in the South African custom as 'coloureds.'  Apart from some 7,000 white farmers, most non-Africans lived in the cities and towns.  The 3,860,000 Africans, by contrast were mostly to be found subsistence farming in the tribal areas with approximately 500,000 living in the segregated urban townships, and many of them foreigners.  Indeed, the reluctance of the Southern Rhodesian Africans to leave the land meant that the farms, mines, and industries were to a great degree reliant on foreign labour, and particularly from Nyasaland.

-Wood, J.R.T. So Far and No Further!: Rhodesians bid for independence during the retreat from empire, 1959-1965. (Johannesburg: 30° South Publications, 2005).

IIRC, the white population peaked to somewhere around 300,000 and then started to decline again as the Bush War got rather hot.  I think it's around 30,000 right now and declining.

Ironically, if it had not been for European rule, the African population would not have expanded so rapidly.

Also 7.62 is a better choice for the game in that part of Africa, and the Rhodesian forces augmented their rations with food taken in the field.

You guys think there is much advantage of 7.62x51 caliber weapon over 5.56x45mm in that environment?
I understand that 7.62 hits harder and further than 5.56 but it's a lot more heavier and maybe overkill for the purpose.
They could carry a lot more 5.56 ammo than 7.62.

A good modern AR would outrange a FAL with ease. The FAL doesn't have the inherent accuracy to compete.

The one real advantage of 7.62 NATO over 5.56 is barrier penetration. Most 7.62 ball doesn't fragment.

Yes. If approached by the wildlife, I want the 7.62.

They had the stuff many years ago.  They are almost certainly out and they are not very responsive.  One only sends them money at their peril.

There's a South African guy named Bertus de Beer who is producing and selling it (cheaper to go through him directly than the online vendors of his products, btw).  I don't recall if he got the pattern's colours overlapped properly, but they are otherwise pretty good from what I hear, and he also makes other items, such as British style smocks, in the pattern.  IIRC he's also making a wet season version of the pattern (green-dominant); not sure if he's going to do the dry season version (replaces green with a brush yellow).

Someone also made a couple of runs on a smaller scale in Europe and you might find his stuff for sale on the New Rhodesian Forum.  The colours are overlapped wrong, though, in the printing (seems to be a very common error with reproductions), which is the only thing wrong with them; otherwise they are pretty good reproductions.

Kommando Store had a page looking for prospective buyers to test the waters, as they were considering doing BDU-pattern uniforms in Rhodie camo, but the page isn't up anymore.  They were only halfway towards the numbers they needed to make the investment last I checked.

If you find older used stuff, the Trident is in fact pretty good.  IIRC, Propper's BDUs in the pattern used a fairly accurate rendition of the camo pattern.  Other reproductions have tended to be inaccurate.  Except for the above, there really isn't anything that looks right or close enough.

Buy through Ebay if you are gonna buy from Trident.  They are tough to deal with otherwise.

What did service get you if you were a foreigner? Just money or did they offer citizenship and land to those who fought?

I've never bought from them, but I know this company does sell repro Rhodie and SADF gear.  I most just follow them for the pictures and history it injects into my news feed.
