The Army has a simple rank structure: Enlisted, Warrant Officer and Officer. Within these ranks there are different pay grades, expectations and responsibilities, and nearly every soldier strives to climb the ladder of success. Yet, one rank in the Army still caters to the lazy person in all of us — the Specialist.

If you’ve served in the Army, you’ve most likely heard the terms “Sham Shield” or “E-4 Mafia.” You may have even been a ring leader at one point, I know I was. When I was deployed I would round up all the other Specialists and we would terrorize anyone who came near our living area. Any stray Private or NCO who didn’t have “back-up” would be gang tackled, duct taped to a cot and decorated with shaving cream.

So what is so special about pay grade E-4? Well, it’s simple really.

A basic fire team is led by a Sergeant (E-5). Thus, a Specialist generally isn’t given soldiers to lead, but is given just the responsibility of looking after oneself. You have no soldiers to lead and no leaders to hound you, so there you remain in limbo.

Here’s where the real fun begins. There are more Specialists in the Army than any other pay grade. And seeing as how promotion to Specialist is more or less automatic and based on time in service (if you can hold your liquor), you’re bound to get those that take advantage of the system know how to tactically maneuver within their job requirements.

My experience was different, especially when getting shit done. Meh, 80% of the time it's better to be a NCO.

As an E4 you would go to S1, motorpool, supply ncos, stand at parade rest, get fucked with, and maybe get what you need.

As an E5, you go to the same spots and say "sgt/ssg/sfc, could you help me with X?", and they would always help.

Tank units are too small to have that kind of Sham Shield Mafia.

In a tank company, there were only 4 line platoons.  They would have a paltry 64 men at full strength. 16 of them would be NCO's or officers.  Of the remaining 48, there would probably be another 10-16 that would be Corporals or higher.  That only leaves around 30 lower enlisted.  With the assorted privates and PFC's, you are now looking at maybe 10 Specialists.

That's a pretty small mafia.

Circa 1985/86 the homosexuals were already there, just still in the wall locker.  We still had 1911's but, the M9 was already going to first line units like the 82nd.  I remember a Spec-6 that lived in our barracks; one day he was a SSG and he looked lost with the new title when we called him sergeant.

Depends.  Had a lot of specialists in my armor units because points were maxed or dudes didn't want it (especially if they were in USAEUR, because there were no corporals and E-5s got the shit NCO gigs).

Additionally, the mafia isn't limited to one company.  A good group of sham-shielders know how to network.

We always called it "The E4 Clause."  You knew what you were supposed to do/where to be/how to get it done.  But unless an E5 or above gave you those instructions, you'd just ignore it.  When question'd we'd always respond, "no one in my chain of command told me about it."

You knew you were good when 1SG pulled you aside quietly and offers to "misplace" your leave form from staff duty, in exchange for those magic E4 powers.

Proudly wore the shield for 6 of the 9 years I was in the guard. Probably the saddest thing was Spec4s retiring with 25, 30 years in

I could have had my Sgt stripes the last year I was in if I was willing to transfer and drive to Ellicot City MD every month for drill. Fuck that.

I fucking love CPLs. They actually have to perform in order to get that next stripe and they know it. I wish we put stripes on every E4 p. Make them remember they aren't there yet. You get a kid who you're sending to the board and filling an E5 slot, put CPL rank on him and watch him move heaven and earth to get shit done. He'll smoke the fuck out of a PVT, too.

Yeah...about the whole E4 thing.  E4 tells E3 to drive through the dirt road on the left, E3 sprechens enough german to tell E4 that the road is closed.  E4 makes it an order...fast forward 100 yards; CUCV buried to the top of the  fenderwells all the way around (had to roll down the windows to get out).

You say being an NCO is a bad thing.  Getting paid like a Cpl but being treated like a private or pfc doesn't sound like a good time.

That was just the beginning of a rather long recovery operation in the german woods.  E3 tells E4 that the road is undermined by the bordering swamp and to grab another CUCV or one of the HumVees...E4 brings 2 1/2 ton wrecker into the swamp.  As wrecker crew starts to unass the vehicle; vehicle starts to slide sideways as the roadway collapses under it...wrecker crew expedites unassing while vehicle rolls over, into the swamp.  E4 looks at E3...turns and starts walking back to base once again.  E3 and the two from the wrecker (also E3s) get MREs off the wrecker and have lunch, then dinner, on top of the CUCV while waiting for the E4 to return.

Agreed. It was usually an E-4 (when I was SGT) I'd go to to get shit done. Not only are they usually knowledgeable, but if they're smart and looking to take initiative they corral a bunch of lower enlisted and get the job done.

Quoted:

E-2 through E-4 is moreso recognized as "advancement", as you noted, it's pretty much automatic based on TIS, TIG, and ability to qualify with a primary weapon system and ability to pass an APFT. Promotion is considered E-5 and above.

I will, however, concede to the point that sham shield certainly had more freedom and ability to not be noticed when shamming.
