At about the 48 minute mark Snowden says the NSA was asking his girlfriend questions about him. One of them was "what do you know about his illness" or maybe I misheard.

He was pretending to be out sick from work while he was in Hong Kong with Greenwald and Poitras.

That fits the profile of one of the current Russian ideological warfare branch operations out of SVR.

They've been pounding a drum of propaganda through Der Spiegel to break the alliance between Germany and the US, while running this constant story of the "romantic" relationship between Germany and Russia.

That's beyond the point of whether what the NSA and the Feds are doing is right.

The gravity and magnitude of what he did mandates alot of planning. You don't turn on your own government (even though it was the right thing to do) without much planning!

Not out of the fear of the government doing it, but other hackers.  Way back when cheap cameras started showing up on most peoples personal computers, there were hackers playing around with this.  They'd access your camera and send you a picture or video of yourself.

The benevolent government loves us, that's why. It protects us from all that is evil in the world, and all it asks for in return is fealty.

It's a small price to pay for safety.

So what would you do, assuming what he states is true, having knowledge of this system in place set to spy on American Citizens within US Borders across all communications? How far do you think our government would go if you leaked the information and didn't run? Credibility is everything, if you were him and you didn't plan it and just came "out" how quickly do you think you'd be "found with 3 hard drives full of child porn and a kidnapped kid in his basement" and being "shot for resisting arrest during a warrant."

Wow, powerful.

I knew things were bad but I had no idea they were that bad. Some of the things he alludes to in that film, which I don't doubt for one second, are just mind blowing.

You will want to put a piece of electrical tape over the camera on your iPad and unplug your phone after watching this.

Mind blowing.

That's pretty much my reaction. Kinda feel like my cell phone needs to spend more time turned off.

Don't forget to pull the battery.

thats exactly why most phones now don't have a removable battery...

How do we know this isn't propaganda itself?

For a while, I was on the "Snowden is a Traitor" side of this fence but honestly the more I hear about what he revealed the more I think he did exactly the right thing.

The scariest part of the whole story, well parts:
1) How many thousands of others in positions similar to Snowden's didn't/don't care that citizen's rights are being violated (or in danger of being violated) on the daily?
2) What has changed since this massive infodump?  Pretty much nothing.....

To answer question 1- no one wants to lose their $400,000/yr earnings and pensions by giving a shit about their fellow countrymen. Justification "as long as I get paid and it is just the guilty..."

To answer question 2- I think Ukraine, ebola, and whatever the scare of the day drew the A.D.D. crowd away from their moral outrage.

Watching now and almost finished, what ever people think of Snowden, traitor, hero, the thing that everyone should agree on is that our government is out of control, the lies that came out of Clapper's mouth, Obama's, his press mouthpiece, the fact that things he released are now declassified so they could speak of it, is scary.

What Snowden did was what we all should be doing, grow a conscience, stand up and start to make it known we are tired of it, but most of us will stay quiet for fear of loosing our jobs, or worse. If enough people stood up, maybe we could get things to change.

What I found interesting is that Snowden bought into Obama's promise of hope and change which I think was the catalyst for what he did.

This.  Except screw fear.  More accurately, contemplate fear.  Everyone talks about "will not comply" because the other side hasn't added much "or else" yet.  It's easy to be a rebel, agitator, or whatever other flashy word you want to use when you aren't risking losing something.  Or everything.  But every one of us waving that "WNC banner" needs to look past the slogans and the sound bytes and the bumper sticker snippets of historical reference and really think about it.  When you know something is wrong, what will you risk to stand up for what is right?

Did you ever get the annual spam email about how the signers of the Declaration of Independence signed their own death warrants by putting quill to paper?  Really easy to read chain letter sort of thing, probably half-wrong about the details, but accurate about that one point.  Think about that.  Would you do it?  Put your name to something like that?  Now, it would be transmitted instantly and unstoppably, stored on government servers indefinitely.  Would you do it anyway, because it was right?  If you were part of the system, would you undermine your own office and coworkers, actively sabotaging their efforts, because you felt the work was morally wrong?  Half the people on this very site would call you a traitor and, when the flashbang set your curtains on fire at 3am, your dog was shot and your children were carted off by protective services, we'd read posts about you playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes.  What about less dramatic but just as devastating?  You could get fired, or your taxes could be screwed, or you could be fined for any number of "mistakes" you didn't know you made in your business paperwork.  You might suddenly find yourself to victim of identity theft, and your credit ruined.  Your kids might not get accepted into certain schools, or might start getting assigned risky duties if they're in the service.  Would you do it anyway?

Scary thoughts, but it's better to contemplate them while it's only a mental exercise instead of when you have three seconds to choose.

Just finished it.

The first fucking thing I'd do if I were elected President in 2016 is to hold a press conference at 12:01am on inauguration day and announce a full and total amnesty for Snowden, should he choose to return.

Second thing I'd executive order some arrest warrants for Clapper and that other bald fuck, Keith Alexander, and try them for lying (treason, stupidity - whatever I could fucking get).

Fuck that documentary pissed me off.
