11:01 a.m. At a press conference in Navarre, Air Force officials said the search for the downed Blackhawk helicopter has shifted toward recovery and have no expectation of any survivors. Officials would not comment on how many bodies have been recovered so far. The Air Force is handing over the recovery mission to the Army National Guard and the Marine Corps Special Operation Command.
The helicopter wreckage has been located under about 25 feet of water in Santa Rosa Sound. Scuba divers found the wreckage but had a difficult time with visibility because the water was so murky. Dense fog is thought to have prevented anyone from witnessing the crash when it happened Tuesday night. A safety review board has been convened and an investigation into the crash has begun. At the time of the crash, there were boats participating in the exercise in a safety capacity. The captains conducted their own search and rescue operations immediately following the crash but were thwarted by the dense fog. U.S. Coast Guard boats are still out searching on Santa Rosa Sound. |

Damn. When I took my first Seahawk flight they told me to hold on if we had to ditch and that we'd sink in a matter of seconds (after the shaking stopped). At least there was hope that I'd make it out alive. Doesn't look like there was much intact here at all.
ETA: 3/15 Talked to my buddy about this today. He's about to become the CO of a Seahawk squadron. He explained that the new birds are almost all carbon fiber and not aluminum like when I was in. That explains why the parts look shredded. |

Chief Warrant Officer 4 George Wayne Griffin Jr, 37; Chief Warrant Officer 4 George David Strother, 44; Staff Sgt. Lance Bergeron, 40; and Staff Sgt. Thomas Florich, 26; died when a UH-60M Black Hawk they were riding on crashed into the Santa Rosa Sound, Florida. “These Guardsmen represent the best of us,” said Maj. Gen. Glenn H. Curtis, the adjutant general of the Louisiana National Guard. “These are brave men, true men. These Heroes’ names will forever be etched on our hearts and in our minds.” Griffin, of Delhi, joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1994. He deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005 and again in 2008-2009. He also served during state deployments during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Isaac as well as in support of Operations River Guardian and Deepwater Horizon. Griffin commissioned as a warrant officer in 1999 before going on to become the battalion standardization pilot with over 6,000 flight hours, including more than 1,000 combat hours. Strother, of Alexandria, served in the Louisiana National Guard from 1988-2007, and again from 2009 until his death. He deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005, Afghanistan in 2011 and Kosovo in 2014. He also served during state deployments for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Isaac. Strother commissioned as a warrant officer in 1994 before going on to become an instructor pilot with over 2,400 flight hours, including more than 700 combat hours. The cockpit crew had almost 9000 hours combined
