The US Air Force confirmed that the 20-year-old Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Flight 13 (DMSP-F13) suffered a "catastrophic event". View Quote I'm thinking Russians and lasers firing a round over the bow. |

lol.
battery went bad. first the guy in NY's cell phone and now a satellite, why wont Obama ban batteries just think what would have happened if that satellite was a child. |

In.
Both Russia and China have been investigating anti-satellite lasers. |

It is a weather satellite. It also doubles as a Pez dispenser to foster good will with the citizens of unfriendly countries. Being that old, it may have run out of candy.

Possibilities, in order of likelihood:
Destructive battery failure. Fuel leak. Hard-kill DEW. Aliens. |

Not sure what the coolant system was like, but that's a possible cause.

Andy Dickson • 29 minutes ago Before people start prattling about the Chinese, Boeing signed a contract with the DOD recently to help improve the range of the Navy's new laser weapon system. Naturally, you would want to do some target practice, so rather than put up a target, just use an old defunct satellite and burn it. They probably hit it, but did not anticipate how rapidly it would break apart and inadvertently created a debris field. I mean, the heat spike was first reported by a civilian group, but the USAF confirmed. Which means they were actively looking at and monitoring the temperature of a mostly useless satellite at the exact time it happened. Details, people. |
