For this comparison lets say a BCM/Colt AR and an Arsenal AK. Who would take the AK over the AR?
I like the AR15, 74 and 47.
If I had to choose, it would be the AR. |
Easy. AK if it's an Arsenal. Worth more! AR market is at an all time low in value while AKs are rising.
Panic or no panic? Because I can still get commie ammo in a panic.
If I was going to be stuck humping it in the woods for the rest of my life like a vagabond - AK.
If I had to choose, probably an AR because I can operate it a little faster. I'm comfortable with either though.
I'm about to have sbr versions of both. With optics, its going to be a tough call.
I'd take either. I own both. I don't cling to any one platform as the holy grail. Both have their strengths.
I own both, I really enjoy shooting AKs, I will probably always own an AK. That said, if I had to choose one, it would be an AR.

<------Prefers 7.62x39 over 5.56 but prefers the AR platform over AK sooooooooo piston AR in 7.62x39 that takes AK mags with a 12.5" barrel FTMFW
I have alot more training with the AR sooooooooooooo AR it is.
I don't share the hatred for the AK that some have here. I love the looks of a SKS. Ever since I was a young man at my first gun show and saw a beautiful SKS on display I have loved them. Watching Red Dawn as a kid made me like the AK.
With that being said, I have to acknowledge that the AR is a superior firearm. |
Depends what it's needed for. Don't want the trashcans blowing over in the wind? AK is perfect for that.
If the SHTF an AR. Any other time? An AR.
Why? Police and military and millions of people have them so ammo and parts would be easier to find, theoretically. |
Which one has the most dependable ammo supply? I'd pick that one.
I love my AK's but if I could only keep one platform it would be the AR-15.

I have an AK and a couple ARs. I took this question to mean if you could only have one and only one. Despite the Arsenal $ continuing to be on the rise, I'd still take the AR as its value plummets into the toilet. The ergonomics are superior to the AK platform. It's a more useful rifle to me and 9x out of 10 I'll grab the AR to go to the range with me over the AK.

AKs are for peasants that defecate in their drinking water.
ARs are for warriors. |

Can I combine?
I have owned and do own a variety of ARs and AKs. The one rifle that has them beat is my Sig 556. It's is sort of a meld of the two. 5.56 with AR ergos and a piston system that has never failed me. Ever AR and AK I've owned has jammed at least once. The only time my sig has failed me was a bad primers or a magazine problem. ARs fail me more than AKs, but in a carbine course I am way more effective with an AR. Shtf I'm grabbing my Sig with AR as backup. |
Take to the trash can, sure.
Take to use in any kind of a fight? Hell no, not over an AR. |
Sold my AR's. My SHTF/GO TO gun is an Arsenal SAM7R with Circle 10 mags loaded with Golden Tiger. If society truly breaks down I feel have the best tool for "long term" survival.

I'm going to head over to GlockTalk and ask them how many would take an XD over a Glock, too.

Details OP. If both are in 5.56, I would take the 5.56 AK. I have both 5.56 AKs (Saiga .223 and Bulgarian AK-74 5.56 build) and ARs. They shoot the same for me using iron sights or red dot. The AK ergonomics and controls don't bother me. The AK will weigh more but I know that it rarely has to be cleaned and doesn't even care whether or not I lube it - I have run my 5.56 AKs dry without issue. The internals on a 5.56 AK are hilariously overbuilt for the cartridge, I don't expect any of them to break or wear significantly.
If it came to the choice between choosing between 5.56 AR and 7.62x39/5.45x39 AK, I would choose the AR. Domestic ammo availability is more important IMO. |
