As for the hecklers, it's almost embarrassing how people behave. If in some of those situations that had been my kid (s)he would have gotten a good pop on the back of the head. |

Try climbing the fence at the White House or any other DC monument and see how many guns get pointed at you. I'll never understand tourists who have nothing better to do on vacation then fuck with a ceremonial guard...while egging their mouthbreathing, short bus riding, sad excuses for children, to do likewise. If they're Americans being shot and killed in the UK by a guard in a bearskin hat would be doing all of us back here a huge favor. I hear you get in the front door. Yeah, probably not the best example 3rdpig... |

It took them a little bit to come up with the techniques from what i understand.....big difference between an L1A1 and the L-85 They should stick to an older type of rifle for parade and bludgeoning use, like how our tomb guards use the M14 with bayonet. Sometimes modern just isn't a good substitute for 10 long pounds of wood and steel with a sharp pointy bit on one end. My regiment struggled with this very question. The issue is that all of the foot guard regiments are combat infantry regiments. When they are not in their rotation at the palaces, they are regular infantry - either training or deployed. So the question is whether you have them use a different rifle for guard duty than the one they user for regular infantry duty. Both our regiment and the British regiments decided that was stupid and dangerous, and whatever rifle they use for guard duty needs to be the SAME rifle they use in the field, so that they are as familiar with it as possible. That logic was the reason that my regiment held onto the M1 Garand for as long as it could. When the rest of the Danish army switched to the G-3 in 1975, the training battalions in the Royal Guard regiment kept using the M1, because it looked better for Guard duty - which then meant that they had to keep using it in the field as well. So you had this weird situation where 11 of the 12 infantry regiments exclusively used the G3, but ONE regiment used the G3 in one battalion, but kept the Garand in two other battalions. Luckily, when the Danish army adopted the M16/M4 in the 1990s, the guard regiment decided to switch as well - so the drill had to be slightly altered, but now at least everyone is on the same page. The slight concession made to appearance's sake was that a short magazine is used (but there are plenty of 30-rounders in the guard room). |

View Quote All the branches apart from the Navy and and a regiment called The Rifles use that drill (the rifles practice something called "light drill" which is a lot faster paced). This is a decent video of the changing of the guards ceremony. It might look like 40 pieces of flair for the sake of flair but almost everything on their uniform has a meaning, including the flag which is their regimental colours listing all of the battles their regiment received battle honours for. |

Here's another idea.. don't point a gun at someone you're not willing to shoot If he had shot someone for "being on a fence" (not even the kind of fence meant to secure an area, just a "for show" fence that only goes up to about mid thigh).. he'd be in prison right now Or maybe not.. maybe the thin blue line fat clown shoes would've protected him He did have a pig sticker on that gun, he might have been getting it at the ready for a good ol' European style bayonnet charge. Would make more sense considering it was at his hip. I've seen a Tomb Guard at Arlington come off the mat lowering his rifle/bayonet at a fat tourist who decided to cross the chain for a better picture. Fat people move fast when an angry screaming guy with a bayonet come at them at a quick march. |

That last guy needs his ass kicked for pointing a rifle at someone for being on a fucking fence. I would love to see you try. Seriously. http://i.imgur.com/ApakwWV.jpg My favourite bit of that encounter was the conversation they had: "Passers-by reported how the would-be intruder said 'Oh you're a big boy now' to the soldier - thought to be Scottish - who in turn replied 'Yes I am a big boy' before pushing him." Also, while I know the guy was mentally ill (seriously, he was off his trolley) and he needs help not extra breathing holes, whenever some self-important arsehole gives the smug "go on then, I dare you" face to a man with a bayonet... I secretly kind-of-want the man with the bayonet to say "ok then" |

In our tepid defense, it seemed that majority of tourist asshattery was Euro or Chinese in origin.
One thing people forget is that the UK is a nuclear power, and the seat of the government and military is within about a 15 square block area (the Palace being a bit of a walk, perhaps 20-30 minutes, from Westminster/Whitehall/10 Downing Street/FCO. The entire area is a theme park with people from ALL over the world. These soldiers are doing a very real Command and Control security mission. |
