I know this guy a little. Never had any business dealings with him. He's a good guy but the govt doesn't like good guys. And of course, the comments are full of derpity derp.

Did they go after him for being a good guy or for playing stupid games?

|
It's a tax thing. That said, if there is a tax on cigs and a tax on alcohol - how long before the per joint tax on weed?

A "good guy" doesn't manufacture illegal liquor and sell it to the public without a license, sorry.

From the pictures, it looks like he was a guy who liked to hunt and liked his shine. Nothing wrong with either, but let's be honest, the .gov didn't go after him because the .gov hates freedom, or hates good guys, they went after him because he was manufacturing and selling alchohol without licenses and without paying taxes.
Frankly, I find it outrageous there is a separate charge because he was selling moonshine while in possession of a legal firearm. And I don't think the penalty for avoiding some alcohol taxes should be felony. I'd also be willing to say maybe even making some moonshine and selling it shouldn't even be a crime. But no matter how nice a guy, he had to know what he was doing was currently illegal and that there was a government agency who basically owes their existence to arresting people for what he was doing. There's the old saying about what happens when you play stupid games... |

How did I not hear about this on the news, that website is for my local news...

I may or may not have some experience in this area and i can tell you as mentioned in the article they had got a tip from somebody he was selling, and if your the producer you dont sell yourself. He took a risk got the rewards for awhile but also payed the price, just the way it is even though this should be legal.

He ran afoul the revenue agents.
6 felonies, 2 class 1 misdemeanors and out on an almost irrelevant $1,000 bond. All because he didn't pay the taxes and apply for the correct licenses. I am sure glad we have this hardened criminal off the street. Oh wait, he's already back on the street. |

Do I believe it should be illegal ? No. But it's not my decision. |

There shouldn't be licensing and regulations around distilling, let the free market handle it. When people start going blind, others will know not to purchase from distiller X and the market will adjust, eventually.

My favorite comment "I watch moonshiners and none of those guys are armed to the teeth."
Yes, reality TV watching qualifies you as educated on the topic. |

Only people who hire lawyers should be able to distill liquor. |

Thank God they caught him before any innocent people ended up drunk.

Did they go after him for being a good guy or for playing stupid games? I guess our opinions differ but why would they go after him for illegal activity and with a firearm? Its obvious you dont know how good this guy is so before you comment i suggest you get informed on how good he is and then you will know they went after him gor being good. The other charges were just a byproduct for the "being a good guy" arrest. Next time you reply think about your reply before you post because good guys dont play stupid games, stupid games play the good guys . |

funny to see all this support for "that thar good ol' boy makin' shine" but if it's mj the tone changes to "baaa baaa evil potheads"
good ol' boy probably smokes mj too lol |

Later when they come for everyone's guns he won't have any left to use.

Just because its not legal does not make it immoral. |

I wonder if there is a discrepancy between the number of jars of moonshine seized at the scene and the number booked into custody of the evidence room.

The very idea of a non-violent felony is completely bizarre to me.

Selling illegal alcohol while carrying a weapon ? So he was carrying all them weapons at once ?

With all those dangerous guns a fella like that probably has armor piercing ammo in his stash.....

Virginia ABC shouldn't even be a thing. Those people are spectacular combination of anachronism and bumbling idiocy.

Yall need to focus on preventing these things from becoming illegal, instead of just ignoring the law and doing it anyway after it's been made illegal.
if you break the law, knowingly, you should be prosecuted. |
