The fatality rate per mile driven is THIRTY TIMES higher for motorcycles than for cars. Denial is an awesome tool. THE FACTS You sound like a lib who advocates for gun control because someone could get hurt with a firearm. Everything we do in life comes with risk. The amount of risk a person chooses to assume is up to them to decide. You mitigate that risk on a bike with training and the proper protective equipment. Arguing that someone not paying attention might hit you is no different than a crack head popping you in the back with a Lorcin .25 auto for your wallet and his next fix. Yeah it could happen, but a defensive posture and situational awareness can prevent most incidents. I'm hardly a basement dweller, and certainly not a gun control "lib". Wife's sister rides. Wife said get her a bike and she'll take care of the riding class. Got wife an old GS550L. Weak, but gets to 70mph. Got myself an '85 Kz1100. I love it, but it's a whiney bitch until it warms up. Both are inop at the moment. The KZ has a leaky fork seal and the GS has a #4 carb that won't quit overflowing. I have to get both up to the garage before the riding season and get them done. ASAP. Wife absolutely LOVES riding. She's a retired Chief, so knows her mind and is still a great wife. A real country girl that can get things done and be a lady at the same time. She's ready to get a newer and larger bike. It would have been nice to get bigger and newer right off, but we didn't know if she'd really be good at it. She was. OP, sounds like your chick is ready to rock and roll, so I'd say get her something she'll be able to work her way into and enjoy for at least several years. My advice? Get new-ish. I enjoyed getting the two bikes right, but would rather not have to keep working on them. I wished they both had fuel injection, because carbs suck ass. I learned to ride street and got my license with an '83 CB1100F. Just because it can go 140 doesn't mean you HAVE to go 140. You can go at crawl speed, too. Put time on them and get her riding well and safely. Safety first, safety last, and safety in between. Happy Woman, happy life. |

I'd recommend a CB 750 and 250 Nighthawk.
CB platform, you can still find them that haven't been run into the ground, and they aren't really collectables so they prices are decent. I bought my '97 for $1400 a few years ago w/ 35K. I've put about another 30k on it (300 per week commute) and only changed tires, a battery, chains, and sprockets. I'll be looking for a 250 for my daughter here shortly. |

About a month ago she laid down the law so to speak and told me what I will be doing this spring or else! First that I have to get her old car fixed and sell it. Then use the money to buy a pair of motorcycles and teach her to ride. It looks like I will have a budget of about $5-6k so I should be able to get something decent enough for us to each ride to work and take on weekend trips (which is her plan, because she thinks taking bikes are the only way that I will actually go) So what should I be looking for, ohh wise GD basement dwelling experts of all things? We each have a daily commute of about 70-75 miles round trip, on the state highway and city streets. Same brand would be nice for ease of maintenance and spare parts. She is pretty small, but she teaches fitness classes, so as long as she can get leverage she can pick up most bikes. Ohh and she wants me to shave my beard into mutton chops too. Anything less than 750cc will lose its appeal on a 75 mile commute. View Quote ETA: Kidding aside, my SO rides (actually got me into riding) and alternates between a 2006 BMW F650GS and an 1998 BMW R1200C. Heated grips are nice in cooler weather. Heated seat like on my K1600GT is also nice. Both of hers are great bikes and good used examples could very well fit your budget. As you may know, the maintenance on bikes is higher than a cheap commuter car, but much more fun. |

This is not a good argument against a street bike. My worst injuries were on street bikes, including a severely broken leg when I was hit by a car. Anyway, i'll leave it with you guys. But close in saying I would never let a woman I love ride a motorcycle on a 75 mile daily commute. Put her in a car and keep her as safe as possible. You don't even have to make the argument about safety. All you have to do is remind her how much better cars are for commuting 75 miles, especially if that's 1 way. Now, I love bikes and I really hate the whole "they are dangerous, nobody should ever ride them" gambit. But I have to admit that (especially certain types of) bikes are less comfy to ride for distances than cars, especially to commute and have some major drawbacks that one trades for the experience of riding a bike (which no car can duplicate, IMHO). For a commuter bike, I'd be looking at a vstrom. (or other larger bore dual sport). They offer a more upright seating position, have good storage, and are much easier to find "make my life more comfortable" accessories for (like big windscreens, electric handwarmers, mounts, lights, luggage, etc. Sure, you can find that stuff for other bikes, but not as easily. I'm not one to go "for style points" so I think that's the other issue I like about dual sports: They aren't an identity unto themselves like crotch rockets or cruisers are. |
