I don't have to wonder anymore.  a long metal brace attached to a really heavy piece of pipe came down with the pipe, taking my finger out like a guillotine.
strange thing is it really didn't hurt.  just kinda went numb.   now i just have a nice annoying nagging pain as it tries to heal.  having to learn to wipe my ass and jerk off left handed is an adventure.

they threw three stitches in it, wrapped it up, gave me some antibiotics and an advil and kicked me the fuck out.

oh well, I have 9 more to go.  at least i'll never have to trim that fingernail again.

You might not ever grow a fingernail there again.  Your cuticle be fuxored.

Best of luck with recovery.

Nice. I know what it's like. I smashed my thumb with a hammer driving a concrete stake into gravel. The only way I could describe it was that it looked like a hot dog that was microwaved to long. Blew the end out. Like you said it was more numb than anything.

Op, nice smack.... when I was 16 I used to ride my dirt bike everyday..anyway was riding one day by myself, it was raining and I wasn't paying super close attention..ended up crashing, and somehow managed to put the first and second fingers of my right hand into the chain and rear sprocket.. both looked much like your finger..anyway..ER visit, some cleaning and stitches and eventually it got better.. it took a few years but both nails finally grew back.......

Is that your cuticle sticking out?

I did similar years ago and my entire thumb was numb, and purely purple.

Try watching your finger slowly turn BLACK , while your trapped for 2 hours with it between a 1500# tire and a "safety" guard on a forklift.

I had already decided to cut it off if help didn't arrive by a certain time, midnight, my neighbor stepped outside to pee before bed, heard me shout from about 1/2 mile away.

he arrived 15 minutes before my cut off time.

Nice... I just smashed my trigger finger over summer... My nail is halfway back to normal but hurt like hell when the last piece of attached nail bed would get bumped.. No er, taped it up and tools lots of aleve weird how one finger can make you adjust everything you do with that hand.

Meh... Fingers can grow back pretty well most times.

I've smashed my left 1st finger completely flat with a framing hammer (think "drive a 20d in one lick" force) like 3 times and I cut my left thumb off at the 1st knuckle once. They both grew back alright and seem to work OK..

Mine was a toe. Wasn't as bad, but it did hurt.
I kept the toe, lost the nail. It's weird, the nail seemed to re-anchor itself and didn't look like it would come off. Two weeks later, the whole nail came off in my hand.

Did that with a slide hammer 2yrs ago. So cold outside my fingers were numb already and I thought I cut the end of it off. Luckily just blew the meat out the side. Taking the glve off was not a very optimistic feeling

I think it was from trying to hammer a pin into a .50 cal mount.

Maybe.  I don't know how a .50 cal round could be used as a hammer.  I don't see it as having enough mass.  And how would it be set off using it alone on a pin?

BTDT

My finger was banged between a semi-loaded trash can and a Jeep trailer.  5 stitches to close it.   Numbness was about the best thing to happen to my finger that day in the motor pool.  Looking back there was a surprisingly small amount of blood that day.  I've cut my fingers that bled more and longer than on That Day.

I would guess using the primed end of the round to smack the pin.
