So, in full disclosure:

I took my wife and children to a sushi joint last night. I was recounting the evening to a friend of mine and his wife went absolutely unhinged about what horrible monsters we were for allowing our children, 2 and 3 years old, to eat raw fish.

I said that I was sure my sensibilities weren't in the minority.

It appears, based on the responses so far, I was right.

There are some guidelines out there about eating large fish (more toxins and metals accumulate over a longer lifespan) for pregnant women, at least. It might be with checking if you were going to feed them a LOT of sashimi, but otherwise... I'd let my kids eat it, if they were so inclined and if we had a reputable place.

My daughter is 9 and had a sushi roll for the first time around 5, I believe.  Wasn't really an age deal but we live in a small town with no sushi.  That was just her first opportunity.  She has had it several times since and loves it.  She's never had sashimi.

Damn, now I want sushi.

When I was a kid, the only fish I knew was frozen fish sticks.  When my mom married my stepfather in 1967, he brought many wonderful new foods into our diet including FRESH fish.

A lot of toxins such as mercury end up concentrating in fish. I wouldn't let them eat it every day but I would let them eat it.

There are some guidelines out there about eating large fish (more toxins and metals accumulate over a longer lifespan) for pregnant women, at least. Kids also aren't supposed to eat too much fish not just pregnant women.

Is it bad that both of my kids, 13 and 7, have tried whiskey? Not drank a whole glass mind you but have tried. And my thirteen year old will sit with me every so often and drink a cup of coffee.

Of course, none of us have ever had sushi. Never was introduced to it.

Where I grew up, we had seafood 4-5 times a week. Because it was fresh and cheaper and better tasting than chicken. My parents, myself, and my son eat seafood. My grandma, mother, and wife ate seafood all while pregnant. All of their offspring have no health effects and those who have taken IQ test scored 135+.

Do you apply that to fish in general?  The portion of fish consumed while eating sushi, is tiny compared to a typical fish dinner, also mercury levels vary tremendously by species.
