Agreed. Fuck that guy's politics, but Penn is an incredible actor. His lawyer character in Carlito's Way is a performance for the ages.

He is for sure. Love the actor, can't stand the man. Same for Depp.

same with deniro, pacino walken, and most of the others in this thread.  oldman, pearce, depp, dicaprio, etc. are in a league of their own because the actor disappears and is replaced by the character

Alex baldwin can be a decent actor, even if he is a wacko.  Maybe it does help to be head case to be a good actor.

If the measuring stick of a good actor is disappearing into your role, these three guys certainly do it. There have been occasions where I have not realized it was these guys until I watched the credits.

Andy Serkis was amazing in Little Dorrit, until I saw the credits I had no fucking clue and he was just a guy with an accent. He really is a hell of an actor.

I'd put Eddie Marsan in that category too, really great character actor that just melts into his roles.

No, he just needs a strong director who won't put up with him doing his Jack Nicholson schtick.  Like Sean Penn.

Have you seen The Pledge?

Hopkins - Titus, if you want to see a proud man go through deep pain this is the best at it, I don't think anyone could have done a better job. Also he reminds me of my father.

These have been mentioned already:
Gary Oldman
Judy Dench
Robert Duvall
Gene Hackman

But one not mentioned:
Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight.  Damn if that wasn't one of the best performances in the past 20 years.

Been watching Breaking Bad lately so I am adding

Bryan Cranston aka Walter White

to the list.

I'm halfway through the last season and I am going to be sad when I have watched all of it.

Bad ass show with a lot of good actors.

Good stuff.

You know, I wasn't completely sold on Sean Bean until he was cast on Game of Thrones. He was a great casting choice for that TV series.

One of the hallmarks of a great actor IMHO is the ability to keep their fucking mouth shut. It is difficult for me to enjoy the acting in a movie when I know way too much about them as a person. Just because someone puts a mic in front of them, doesn't mean the world gives a shit about their opinion. Norton and Spacey are prime examples of how actors should behave. Both are great actors that like to keep their private lives private. Spacey is almost certainly gay but hasn't "come out" for the attention whoring like some would. He lets his work speak for itself.

My list:

Ben Foster

Gary Oldman

Guy Pearce

Robert Duvall

Leo Dicaprio

Natalie Portman

Marlon Brando

Robert Deniro (his older work)

Joe Pesci (not much range but he's magic in certain roles)

Brad Pitt

Matthew Mcconaughey

Joaquin Phoenix
