But in making his point, Cumberbatch said, "I think as far as colored actors go, it gets really different in the U.K., and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities" in the U.S. than in the U.K., "and that's something that needs to change." Klan motherfucker! I'm devastated to have caused offense by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done. I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive. The most shaming aspect of this for me is that I was talking about racial inequality in the performing arts in the U.K. and the need for rapid improvements in our industry when I used the term." Cumberbatch added, "I feel the complete fool I am and while I am sorry to have offended people and to learn from my mistakes in such a public manner please be assured I have. I apologize again to anyone who I offended for this thoughtless use of inappropriate language about an issue which affects friends of mine and which I care about deeply." USA Today reported that this was "doubly embarrassing for Cumberbatch" because his family's ancestors include slave owners in Barbados.-SLAVER BASTARD!!! |

How long until whites are forced to apologize simply for existing?

I don't think Benedict Cumberbatch has a racist bone in his body.
|
|
Was there a memo about not using the term "colored"? I don't recall seeing it.

With a name like Benedict Cumberbatch, he can say whatever he wants.

I dont get why coloured is considered a derogatory term. What difference is it from Black as both are similar words. Its a lot better than what a lot of blacks seem to call themselves.
|
|
That was an all-out groveling apology, notable for it's use of the active voice ("I'm sorry I offended you", as opposed to the passive "I'm sorry you were offended").

I was taught that Black was a color, Negro was a race. White is a color, Caucasian is a race.
Is this no longer the English language? |

When I was a kid-------a long fucking time ago--------"colored" was the accepted POLITE name for blacks.
Sooo.........does that make me a racist by default??? because I'm old????because I remember???? I really,REALLY don't give a fuck how you label me. |

Story is obviously a fake cooked up by Hollywood publicists, he would have said "coloured"

View Quote A buddy of mine said "African American" when we were out in a bar a fee years ago, no one says that in casual conversation around here that I know. He works for a big company and I am sure just hot into the habit. I mentioned it to him and he honestly thought he had said black. The ridiculous part is of course he was being all PC and still got his dick in the wringer, like the priests who tweeted about the cops shooting black mug shots, then the priests were called racist because they were all white

It would have been the most awesome thing in the universe if he said, deadpan, "Oh god, I'm sorry I didn't mean that. I meant to say n*****r."
Fucking crybabies and their ever-changing demands.

if you call a black person colored your either ignorant, racist, or both. It just sounds wrong.

I think they are referred to as Afro-Caribbean generally, but it seems to change frequently. The official categories are show in the Census classifications of ethnicity. Cumberbunch is a bitch for apologizing. What a twat. |

View Quote It's only wrong because blacks continually seek to change the language and any attempt to describe their appearance. Negro, then colored, then African American, then Black, then person of color, what's next? What's acceptable, that won't be in 10 or 20 years? The truth is none of those terms are pejorative, or mean, unless you want them to be. It's a description, void of malice, no different than white, caucasian, euro-skinned, whatever.
|
|
What is the preferred term then? Just "black/s"?
I could have sworn I saw "persons of color" on a ton of the Ferg. posters and flyers going around during the riots. Maybe Brit politics are at a different point because I could have sworn that was acceptable currently here. |
