Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

They were vital in the military but you couldn't call them hats. They had special terms. I don't see why it should be different for LEO.

In my old town in NY they wore black cargos, boots, soft armor that said POLICE on it and black baseball hats with the town police emblem on it. Their idea of professional was looking like a SWAT team waiting for a call at every road block. One guy even pulled me over once and was wearing short sleeves with the body armor on and had a full sleeve on one arm.

No
I watched a "How its Made" on Stetsons a few weeks ago and it was pretty cool.

I absolutely hate wearing a hat... We wear them for roll call and keep them with us on the street... But they're horrible! There are bosses where I am that will make sure you lose time if they see you without it on... But IMHO... They're a safety issue. Most uniform hats have a low brim... If you wear them "correctly" it greatly restricts your field of view.
That being said... I don't mind them for formal events... But not for the street. |
|
Fuck that noise. My hair is too well groomed to cover with a hat.

Cops should look professional. Just like anyone else.
Street cops who look like thugs? No thanks. If they are in gang units or something where they won't really be interacting with 'normal' citizens it's one thing, but for guys on patrol, look like a cop. Like Old_Painless says, I think a 5 point is good for IFF but beyond that it's just a hat. The new trends of t-shirt and 5.11 pants and no identifiable police 'stuff'? No thanks.

You know in the years of wearing cargo pants lol, I have never had a citizen complain about my appearance and have frequently been told by law abiding citizens that my uniform is very "sharp". The only time I have been told I looked like "SWAT" was by a public defender who must have had a hard time reading the actual unit Iam assigned to which is in block letters on my back and on both shoulder patches, but the judge thought his oversight was humerous. I find the butthurt pretty funny around here though, the people I serve have no problem with it so I find it of little concern |

The local PD here used to wear Confederate grey uniforms with Stetsons, then they switched to LAPD blue with the NYPD style hats in the '90s.
I always thought that was interesting. But then again, this city must recruit directly from the NYPD. Seems like a lot of those guys end up here. |

Yes.
Our DPS wear cowboy hats, but none of the rest of the cops do. It has made them lazy and power mad.
|

The hat is the most immediately item of recognition for a police office/deputy sheriff. That said, short of a riot where brain buckets should be mandatory, it should be left to the department's discretion whether its officers are required to wear headgear.
|
|
They should wear flatbills with Punisher logos and "FUCKIN FIVE-OH" emblazoned across the side.
|
|
Troopers still wear their trooper hats. Des Moines still wears the 8 point aka bus driver hats. Other than the occasional baseball cap virtually no one else wears hats, at least in Central Iowa. I think the sheriffs still have Stetsons, but I haven't seen one in years.

Why is it that lawyers need to stick their nose in everything?

I think a more important questions is, should lawyers have to wear barrister robes and wigs like in Canada and England?
