Overheard in the Office... Me: "That's a pretty thing. Oldest commissioned warship still afloat!" RX: "Are they firing..." Me: "...a 17-gun salute. Yup." RX: "But just because it's commissioned, we wouldn't actually use it except as some last resort." Me: "They take it out every couple years and turn it around I think." RX: "But they don't engage the enemy." Me: "They could. They're right there in Boston harbor, after all." View From The Porch |

Isn't there a story about a lady in Boston bitching about the cannons in front of the ship's commander (captain?)?

she is a beauty... and in some weird, nostalgic way it would be neat to see her fire broadsides once again in anger... probably absolutely pointless, but it would be neat...

I still remember going aboard her as a kid. Very knowledgeable crew assigned to her, and they love telling her history.

I went there last weekend, while visiting my in-laws. She's getting prepped to go into dry dock in March for the next 3 years for a total refit.
As she sits, the bowsprit and all yardarms have been removed, as well as all the cannon. The cannon are lined up in rows on the dockside. Still a good looking ship even stripped down. |

time for a major overhaul if my memory is functioning correctly. View Quote At first my thought was, no way. It just went through a major overhaul, and I remembered that they used some of the 200 year old Live Oak trees they cut down in Charleston SC when they were building the Mark Clark Expressway. Then I realized that was about 30 years ago. . Shit....I'm old! |

She's in a shit ton better shape than the Constellation is. They have all the quarters and the bottom deck sealed off though, so that disappointed me slightly. The guns, if I remember correctly are just copies of the originals, so I don't know if they'd survive firing.

LONG time, 10 years ago she got the 4 sails after a donation drive. with all the money the ,.gov wastes the cost of buying her sails would be nothing |

I few years ago I made the trip south to see the gathering of tall ships in San Diego
Impressive to say the least .... Standing on the flight deck of the Midway and watching them sail around the bay and fire at each other was the best part. I never knew that so many country’s maintained navy sailing ships and have the fng’s train on them. |

But if you go there, you're an hour and a half away from Fall River, which is also a pretty impressive set-up. You're also right next to Groton. If you want to play with Navy Things, that's one of the best places in the world to do it. |

The last time I was there (2000 or 2001) I was blown away by the change since 1978. I did not have time to see the aviation museum, that is also light years different than the display that stood out by Mercury Blvd. |

Oh my God, it is in Boston. Oh the horror!
I've traveled across the world. In many places I wasn't armed. Go see stuff, because when you're dead (which will happen sooner than you expect it) you won't be able to do cool stuff like see the World's oldest floating commission warship.

I still say having her fully functional, along with a battleship, should be things we have as a nation.
Given the gazillions of dollars that we waste on stupid shit, the cost of doing this shouldn't be too steep. Just cut out the grant for researching the habits of African hookers, building shrimp treadmills and the like and we shouldn't have any problem financing a tall ship and a battleship. |
