I know that 9mm is better. I have plenty of 9mm pistols. This gun is for pocket carry.
I bought a M&P Bodyguard last week on an impulse. What carry ammo should I buy? This looks pretty nice. BUFFALO-BARNES LEAD-FREE 380 Auto +P Ammo - 80 gr. Barnes TAC-XP |

FMJ in a .380, better penetration and .380 HP doesn't expand much anyway.

|
Hornady Custom or pretty much any other major manufacturers XTP loading
|
|
Warm weather - Hornady Critical Defense.
Cold weather - Ball. Need the penetration. This is for cold weather states like MI. Warmer weather states may get away with hollowpoints all year round. |
|
Lehigh Defense XP if your gun will cycle it. My Glock 42 loves it.

Old_Painless says that you should shoot FMJ in a .380 to achieve proper penetration. I don't know much more than that, but he seems to shoot a lot of stuff - so, I'll go with that. |

There is a great test video on YouTube. Look for it. They tested a lot of common brands that you would think would be good. It was surprising to see Speer and Federal fall short and Hornady was dogshit. The only brand that got consistent 12"+ penetration was some brand I was unfamiliar with. It was even better than Buffalo Bore which was my first choice. Seriously, do some research. .380 isn't the anemic caliber in HP it once was if you go with the right brand.
eta: found it! It was Precision One. Consistently penetrated over 12". 13.5" average bare gelatin, 13.8" average through heavy denim; consistent expansion. I will have to find some for carry when I pick up another .380. He was shooting it outbid a micro .380, too. Impressive. |

In .32, .380, and 9x18 I use FMJ, preferably Sellar and Bellot
These rounds don't expand reliably and the hot FMJs make enough energy to get enough penetration. |

Anticipating someone wheeling out the single stack 9mm unicorn diatribe.

Ball for me. Under penetration is more of a concern than under expansion.

You don't "run" ammo bro, you "rock" it.
I'd rock Hornady Critical Duty. I have no stats to back up that choice. I just like them. |

You should run what you can tactically operate operationally

Posted is the summary vid, the vid for each brand tested is on the guy's site and youtube. He is also doing the same tests with 9mm out of short barrel, vids on site. Kinda cuts through all the hype and lets one see real performance to expect. |

I used to carry Hornady Critical Defense - never again. |

I stopped using Critical Defense in my LCP as well as Golden Sabers after reviewing this guy's you tube video's. I bought several boxes of the Fiochhi Extrema which uses the Hornady XTP bullets and both my LCP's ran great on them. If you are going to carry a pocket .380 watch this guy's testing. |

For others to simply dismiss .380 as not expanding or lacking sufficient penetration, the tests he did are informative. If you are a .45.>9 guy, this is all moot anyway. |

XTPs don't over-expand, so they have adequate penetration. Hornady, Fiocchi and others load them.

In true arfcom fashion, get both- a good hp and stagger it with high quality ball in the mag.
