That's one the photos don't do justice. The video is heartbreaking. Purley is watching his friend Williamson die and no one will help him try and save him.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistor

The transistor is the fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, and is ubiquitous in modern electronic systems. Following its development in 1947 by American physicists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley, the transistor revolutionized the field of electronics, and paved the way for smaller and cheaper radios, calculators, and computers, among other things. The transistor is on the list of IEEE milestones in electronics, and the inventors were jointly awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for their achievement.

The vids on youtube are particularly hard to watch. They show everything. You can see Williamson trying to get out, and Purley's repeated attempts to save his friend. With every passing second, Purley gets more and more desperate as the fire gets bigger and hotter, culminating with him walking away while suffering a mental breakdown.

It's one of the most tragic sequences I've ever witnessed on film.

Sad part is we sold it to Sony as we found no use, IIRC, thus the influx of Jap. transistor radios.

no; beginning in 1951 Bell Labs licensed the patents covering the two transistor types (point-contact, and junction) for $25,000 per license.   and, Sony was one of the original licensees.

It's hard to put "two and two together" when you're racing at triple digit speeds and only see something for a few seconds. From what I've heard, the racers probably thought Purley was the guy who flipped over and had gotten out. They had no idea he had stopped and was trying to save Williamson.

Either way, that video is one of the most tragic I've ever witnessed. You can practically feel the despair Purley is subjected to.

below, the hill in the distance to the left is famous in it's own right.

Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of Bell Labs used the Holmdel Horn Antenna located on Crawford Hill to take measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation. They were awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics for these efforts that supported the Big Bang theory. For more information, see Discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation (link).

My BIL worked at Bell, then Lucent. He told me at the time that he saw incredible examples of how far they had fallen into corruption and incompetence. When the phone company was broken up, the downward spiral began. Now he works for Cray.

Before dereg there was a concept that if you gave geniuses the room to do whatever they wanted you'd end up with million dollar ideas almost accidentally.  It worked but it was hard for an accountant to draw a direct line from expense to return.  Once the gravy train ran out of steam the accountants got their say.

Why be mad?

The fact that people can enjoy that beach as a luxury is a testament to the men who fought to liberate Europe.

We honor their sacrifice by living the life that they died to allow us to live.

Will the people on the beach get that? Probably not. But that is what I think of when I look at that picture.

Yeah, that is one of the worst things I've ever seen.  Poor babies.

True, and likely to be taken out of context.

This thread is interesting as a social study if nothing else.

Thank you!   You and your co-workers are special.

My son is one of those "you" saved.

It's one of the most tragic sequences I've ever witnessed on film.

I think we were at that race. We went for a little while then left.

I think I still have the program for it in the attic.

ETA: couldn't find it. I may have "cleaned out" things a while back.

LeMans 1966. After 3 years and $3million, Ford stomped Ferrari with a 1-2-3 win before the first Ferrari crossed the line.

ETA: still one of the coolest looking cars ever made.
