This one always brings a tear to my eye.
I almost lost my dad to a heart attack three years ago he was 77.
Even though we've had our ups and downs i cant't imagine what it would have been to grow up without him.

To lose ones father so young is heartbreaking.

I survived busing. Mattapan native here.

When liberals really wanna fuck things up they always go big, and busing was a prime example. Fuck you Judge Garrity!

That lawyer in that picture was never touched with that flagpole by the way. It was taken at a convenient angle. That doesn't justify the idiots assaulting him, but is a deceptive photo.

Black families were protesting too, it just didn't fit the media's agenda so wasn't reported. The only people murdered during all this were white, and the only students stabbed were white.

Mattapan wasn't a white neighborhood so you can imagine how much fun it was for me. It sucked. Garrity made my life a living hell.

To explain to non gamer types. One player association was using an area to store their ships and supplies. Said area had a pay to protect barrier around it, they missed a payment and another Russian player association attacked them when their protection lapsed. What transpired was a battle that lasted almost 20 hours and cost nearly $300,000.00 in damages (U.S.) In game currency can be bought and sold for real life currency. This missed bill caused sovereignty to drop across the system leaving the station vulnerable to capture. Seizing the opportunity, the CFC (Goonswarm Federation, Razor Alliance, Black Legion and the Initiative) and Russian Coalition (Solar Fleet, Darkness of Despair and Against ALL Authorities) captured the station.”

All in all, 70 Titans were lost (Titans are the massive God ships within the EVE universe) which cost around $3000 a go. Along with the 70 Titans which were lost, 4,000 ships were lost in the vast space which adds up to approximately $284,500.
When all came to an end, N3 and Pandemic lost roughly 40-50 titans while CFC, Rus, and co managed a slightly better 20-25. CFC won, but obviously not without some serious wounds to nurse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute

The Bellamy salute is the salute described by Francis Bellamy, Christian socialist minister and author, to accompany the American Pledge of Allegiance, which he had authored. During the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance, it was sometimes known as the "flag salute". Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazis adopted a salute which had the same form, and which was derived from the Roman salute. This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

I actually learned that years ago reading G. Gordon Liddy's book.
A quick glance at the picture I assumed it had something to do with nazi youth group.

Somee of these pictures need no explanation.
others need a little help.

Their objective was to achieve financial security and make outlaw history by simultaneously robbing two banks. From the beginning, their audacious plan went astray. The hitching post where they intended to tie their horses had been torn down due to road repairs. This forced the gang to hitch their horses in a near-by alley - a fateful decision.

Emmett boldly rode back to where Bob Dalton was lying, and reaching down his hand, attempted to lift his dying brother on the horse with him. 'Its no use,' faintly whispered the fallen bandit, and just then Carey Seamen fired the contents of both barrels of his shot-gun into Emmett's back. He dropped from his horse, carrying the sack containing over twenty thousand dollars with him, and both fell near the feet of Bob, who expired a moment thereafter."

They tried to out do the James gang by robbing two banks at once.

Emmett was the only gang member to survive and was sentenced to life in prison but was pardoned after 14 years.

Wow!

I was down there in the late 90's for work and went through the museum. The hardware store where the towns people armed themselves was still open for business too. It still had wooden floors, I remember it was loud walking across them.

20 some thousand dollars was quite a bit of money back then.

On that same day, South Vietnamese Air Force Major Buang-Ly loaded his wife and five children into a two-seat Cessna O-1 Bird Dog and took off from Con Son Island. After evading enemy ground fire Major Buang headed out to sea and spotted the Midway. The Midway's crew attempted to contact the aircraft on emergency frequencies but the pilot continued to circle overhead with his landing lights turned on. When a spotter reported that there were at least four people in the two-place aircraft, all thoughts of forcing the pilot to ditch alongside were abandoned - it was unlikely the passengers of the overloaded Bird Dog could survive the ditching and safely egress before the plane sank. After three tries, Major Buang managed to drop a note from a low pass over the deck: "Can you move the helicopter to the other side, I can land on your runway, I can fly for one hour more, we have enough time to move. Please rescue me! Major Buang, wife and 5 child."

After consultation with the USS Midway Carrier Task Force CO, Admiral William L. Harris, Chambers issued the order to allow the plane to land on the Midway's flight deck.[6] The arresting wires were then removed, all helicopters that could not be safely or quickly relocated were pushed over the side and into the sea. To get the job done he called for volunteers, and soon every available seaman was on deck, regardless of rank or duty, to provide the manpower to get the job done. An estimated US$10 million worth of UH-1 Hueyhelicopters were pushed overboard into the South China Sea. With a 500-foot ceiling, five miles visibility, light rain, and 15 knots of surface wind, Chambers ordered the ship to make 25 knots into the wind. Warnings about the dangerous downdrafts created behind a steaming carrier were transmitted blind in both Vietnamese and English. To make matters worse, five additional UH-1s landed and cluttered up the deck. Without hesitation, Chambers ordered them scuttled as well. Captain Chambers recalled in an article in the Fall 1993 issue of the national Museum of Aviation History's "Foundation" magazine that

[div style='margin-left: 40px;']the aircraft cleared the ramp and touched down on center line at the normal touchdown point. Had he been equipped with a tailhook he could have bagged a number 3 wire. He bounced once and came stop abeam of the island, amid a wildly cheering, arms-waving flight deck crew.

Major Buang was escorted to the bridge where Captain Chambers congratulated him on his outstanding airmanship and his bravery in risking everything on a gamble beyond the point of no return without knowing for certain a carrier would be where he needed it. The crew of the Midway was so impressed that they established a fund to help him and his family get settled in the United States.[7] The Bird Dog that Major Buang landed is now on display at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL.[8

The prosthetic leg belongs to Army 1st Lt. Melissa Stockwell (Ret.), the first female American soldier to lose a limb during the war in Iraq. She is reciting the Pledge of Allegiance with the Bush family standing in the background.  Interestingly enough, neither of the former first ladies is looking directly at Lt. Stockwell, each carefully averting their eyes, while former President George W. Bush appears to be staring at her with a befuddled and confused look on his face.  We can only imagine what he might actually be thinking, but his gaze clearly directs our attention to her star spangled, red, white and blue prosthesis, an ersatz symbol of the personal and private cost of the war in Iraq that contrasts with the shape and contour of her remaining, normal leg.

Me too.

After spending a fair amount of time thinking about it, I've concluded that the feds decided one dead American citizen in that desert would have ignited something far too big for them to handle, so they punted the football.

Although life has mercilessly kicked me in the balls many times more than the average man in this country. ,  I look at pictures like that and think.   "Damn.   Ive got it good."

Are they still married? Whoever raised that woman did it right. Any backstory to this???
IIRC, they got divorced after something like a year and he died some time after that.

Right.  I have nothing to do all day other than read this thread and then research every single fucking picture some lazy bastard posts without the simple courtesy of doing just once, what you would have EVERY OTHER  PERSON do, FOR EVERY PICTURE.

I watched both of these events unfold on live TV, decades apart.

Stayed home from school to watch this as a kid.  I was 8.

Many years later, got up early on a weekend morning to have a cup of coffee and watch the news.

At the time of the Columbia's maiden voyage, we lived in a house where a large portion of the second story was taken up by a huge L shaped room. My brother and I shared that room, with our individual legs of the L being separated by various bits of furniture, but still able to freely talk and such.  We lay in our beds that night, listening to the launch, live, on the radio.  It's an enduring memory, and is the reason I always liked Columbia most, of all the fleet...and why her breakup on re entry hit me harder than the Challenger explosion, which I also clearly remember.

I remember a thread debating that pic. A few locks and at least one ban IIRC.

So weird to see this.  I was in Mostar about 3 years ago.  That's the sidewalk I took to get from my hotel to the (rebuilt) bridge.  It's all touristy shops now.  Just below the bridge to the right is the restaurant where I had lunch.
