There's an episode of James May's Man Lab where they build one. Looks kinda fun.

Nice father son project OP! Be very careful and wear proper PPE, molten metal is not something to fuck around with and doesn't play well with water, especially molten steel.

Only thing I would change is using an actual crucible vs the fire extinguisher bottom. they can be found online or eBay pretty cheaply. |

At minimum 100% cotton clothes, leather gloves and shoes/boots and safety glasses. A fire resistant jacket (green jacket) and a full face shield with welding gloves would be better. Should be able to pick them up anywhere that sells welding supplies. The design looks good. At least he wants to do something cool like that than plastered to his phone or xbox/playstation.

My 14 year old son...
I love how that's an excuse. My 4 year old needed a quad copter for Christmas for her gross motor skills. |
|
So, you put the crucible in and add the charcoal around it, light and blow into pvc for more heat?
Would this crucible be ok for lead bullet casting? Txl |

Is he really picking up that hacksaw crucible with a set of salad tongs?

Cast jewelry or small parts.
Remember splash apron, gloves and face shield for both of you. |

http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/ has a bunch of information about this sort of thing. Waste oil burners, furnaces, crucibles, aluminum, bronze, iron casting, etc.

Look around for ideas on simple things to cast. Lost wax or lost foam can be done pretty easily with simple materials and turn out well.

The smallest "A" shape clay graphite one. Follow the instructions to temper it! They are kind of like a beer bottle, can take quite a bit of abuse until you hit them just the right way... View Quote Great. Thanks for the help. All I need to do now is not let Mrs Reno figure out that this could be dangerous. |

Careful with aluminum casting. When it hits skin, it sticks. Also, remember that hot, just-solidified aluminum and cold aluminum look exactly the same, as opposed to steel that will glow. When dealing with casting, don't walk on or touch ANY aluminum until you've carefully verified that it is cold.
That said, it IS fun, as long as you are careful. |

I would totally make one of those and cast things if I had a proper yard.
