90% of U-Verse techs just cobble some shit together, get it working for five minutes, and leave. The other 10% (myself included), take pride in our work.
Next time the service drops, take note of a few things:
1. Do any of the lights on the RG (modem) turn red?
2. Is there a certain time of day it drops?
3. Are there any other electronics in the house that could be interfering?
4. What is the weather like? (rain could be causing short)
Some more things to consider.
1. Is the RG on a Cat5 line or Coax? If it's on coax, a loose connection could be the problem. If it's on cat5, a staple through the wire could be causing the trouble.
2. Any landscaping work in the past? The buried wire in your yard could have been damaged.
Somethings to ask the next tech who comes out:
Q: What type of card am I on?
K and N cards are the best, F cards are older and their performance degrades with age.
Q: How far am I from the crossbox?
0-2200ft should be 32Meg profile.
2200-3000ft 25Meg profile
3000-5000ft bonded pair 25Meg profile
Q: What does the copper test look like?
The tech can test the cables from the house to the main box down the street. This will show what kind of condition the buried cable is in.
Q: Is the RG feed coax or cat5?
In my area we are required to replace coax with cat5.
Q: What do the connections look like in the Crossbox, Ped, and NID?
There could be a loose wire somewhere causing the issue. The crossbox is the main box that feeds the neighborhood. The ped feeds the houses in close proximity to you. The NID is the plastic box on the side of you house.
