The first concert I ever went to was Judas Priest, the Defenders of the Faith tour. I was in junior high and my parents had a lot of reservations letting me go, but my friends talked them into it.

Rob Halford, Dio, Freddie Mercury, and Robert Plant are my all time favorite vocalists.

Left out Bruce Dickinson.

That gay guy got a lot of other bands wanting to be like him.  He has great vocal ability, even to this day.  Priest made metal what it is today.

I can't make it live, but this performance is awesome.

So what. He sings the macho songs. Hell Bent for Leather is not a homo anthem. Listen to the words and look at the etymology of the song title. Of course, if you read innuendo into everything, you'll have a field day with My Little Pony.

Yeah, he's gay. So what?
My favorite Priest song came to be a couple years after it's release.
Every year, a bunch of us would jump on our bikes in June, and head North for Laconia. A buddy got a Yamaha Seca 750 Turbo, and when I was doing 100 mph, and he sailed by me like I was at a stoplight, it kinda stuck.

Who cares about his sexual orientation?

Judas Priest is legendary. I just saw them perform, and can count on one hand the number of retirement-age metal icons that can still bring a show. Halford's 63, Hill's 63, Tipton's 67, and I salute them for their perseverance.

Halford's voice was getting a little ragged, but the man can still scream.

one of a kind vocals. one of the great singers in the past 30 years. I've heard him sing Opera as well. In the same class as Freddie Mercury.

That is pretty metal, too. That guy had a very distinct voice.

Halford has always had a set of pipes on him. Dio is probably the most versatile vocalists of all the metal vocalists - he had range and nuance. When I think of classic metal vocalists with character, I have to also include Bruce Dickinson, Dee Snider, and Ozzy.

Honorable mentions go to Don Dokken, Michael Sweet, David Coverdale, and Joe Elliot.

Halford rocks

I could give a fuck about his choices...his life...his choice

Speaking of JP lyrics...Electric Eye from back in the early 80's - very prophetic

Electric Eye

Up here in space
I'm looking down on you
My laser's trace
Everything you do

You think you've private lives
Think nothing of the kind
There is no true escape
I'm watching all the time

I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I'm electric, electric spy
I'm protective electric eye

Always in focus
You can't feel my stare
I zoom into you
You don't know I'm there

I take a pride in probing
All your secret moves
My tearless retina
Takes pictures that can prove

I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I'm electric, electric spy
I'm protective electric eye

Electric eye
In the sky
They feel the stare
So always there

There's nothing you can do about it
Develop and expose
I feed upon your every thought
And so my power grows

I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I'm electric, electric spy
I'm protecting electric eye

I'm electric, electric spy
I'm protecting
Protective, detective
Electric eye

You might enjoy this then (assuming you haven't already heard it)...

Hear 'n Aid was a one-off project of the heavy metal/hard rock scene of the 1980s to raise money for famine relief in Africa. According to Ronnie James Dio's MySpace profile, the project raised $1 million within a year.

The song was recorded on May 20 and 21 1985 at the A&M Records Studio in Hollywood, California. The project included contributions from Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tommy Aldridge and members of Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Queensrÿche, Blue Öyster Cult, Vanilla Fudge, Y&T, Rough Cutt, Giuffria, Journey, W.A.S.P. and Night Ranger as well as the parody band Spinal Tap. Lead vocals were shared between Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Kevin DuBrow, Eric Bloom, Geoff Tate, Dave Meniketti, Don Dokken and Paul Shortino. Vivian Campbell, Carlos Cavazo, Buck Dharma, Brad Gillis, Craig Goldy, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Ojeda and Neal Schon all added guitar solos. Iron Maiden's Dave Murray and Adrian Smith were in the middle of their 'World Slavery Tour' at the time and flew in to attend the main session. A documentary was shot of the recording process and released simultaneously.
