I'm going to say this one, for the browning high power. The first I'm aware of to popularize "high capacity" mags for a pistol. 13 rounds, not bad for the 1930's. http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/mec-gar%209mm%20Hi%20Power%20magazines%2013%20vs%2015%20shot_files/image002.jpg View Quote Nope, that would be the 7.65 M1907 Savage "10 shots quick". Double stack mag much like the later H-P. It also saw service with the French in WW-1. French Contract M1907 |

interesting question.
I would say the Lewis Gun. great capacity, early 1900's, laying it ontop of the gun allowed it to be used close to the ground/on the ground. |
|
While I have to agree with the Savage, I think the FN P90 comes in second place.
Yes, I aware that they did not originate that design, and that some claim that they stole it. They were the first, and as far as I know, the only ones to make a commercial success of it. |

The Calico M950 mag is pretty cool but I like the P90 mag better.

Looks like shit, but not a bad range mag. I have a few. they were going for like 4.99 a couple months ago. |

What was the Russian AK variant that was chambered in 9mm and used a helical mag that mounted under the barrel (like the calico)? ETA: NVM here is is: Bizon http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e5/PP-19_Bizon_right_view.jpg/300px-PP-19_Bizon_right_view.jpg View Quote This |

It's become a standard mag for 5.56 in both military and civilian use, so popular that modern military pattern rifles in 5.56mm are a hard sell unless they accept this particular mag. Other mags might have done it first, but this one has done it in the most applications and the most cost efficient manner. We've recently seen ~$7 mag prices.....$7 fucking dollars. I remember a time when a good NIW colt mag would go for $50 |

The mag is one of the worst aspects of the AR. That's why it failed STANAG. |

View Quote Considering the taper and the rim of the 8mm Lebel cartridge, those Chauchat magazines were indeed innovative. Shame they were too flimsy to hold up, and a shame that they had those cutouts in the side. Of the magazine designs which have survived to this day, the Savage/Hi-Power is still in widespread use. The P90 is not. (Not widespread, just a couple of guns use it). Lewis, Thompson, Degtaryev, PPSh, Suomi drums don't see much service use, as much as some civilian enthusiasts may love them. I am going to go with the double column pistol magazine, as typified by the Savage and Hi-Power. Though the broomhandle Mauser beat them both, it was not detachable. The Calico was cool, though. I had a buddy who had one, and while the magazine functioned well, the carbine lacked rigidity. It was an interesting system, however. |

I have a Calico .22lr rifle with a 100 round helical magazine. The rifle has a threaded barrel, so I have 100 rounds of suppressed .22lr in rifle with red dot optic. I like it!

Quoted: Since removable magazines weren't specified, this 8 round magazine loaded by an automatically ejected en-bloc clip was extremely innovative. http://www.fulton-armory.com/images/categories/NSM1-600.jpg View Quote I actually think the clip fed system was obsolete before it was fielded. IMO. Obsolete does not mean ineffective though. |

I'll probably get flamed for this but the Ruger 10/22 Rotary mag is pretty damn solid

Here is another contender. http://popgun.ru/files/g/85/orig/6561611.jpg http://www.rickysinc.com/Gun%20Related/US%202027%20Thompson%20Seymour%20Drum.jpg And another: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1e/Lewis_Gun.jpg http://sadefensejournal.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/lewis2.jpg View Quote This. Nothing comes close to the drum for size vs. capacity when you get it right. |
