I have a friend who just got hired on with a railroad. I believe his ultimate job will be conductor, but for now I think he's just the low man on the totem pole.
I've been tasked with finding a Christmas gift for him with a $50 limit. I know there's been talk of having to work in the cold, so I was thinking something to ease that may help, but beyond that I have no clue. |

Got my Norfolk southern engineer brother in law a set of Carhartt Artic Wool Socks. I have a pair I wear when I do anything outside in the cold and they are amazing.

Dudes don't really get gifts for other dudes. Especially if you've already given the typical guy to guy presents.

Every railroader needs duct tape. A good pair of gloves and socks would likely be appreciated, as well as anything warm for the winter.

Normal dude rules don't apply with family, I guess. Also his first grown up job after college... I figure socks and gloves are a good 'welcome to the suck that is being an adult' type gift |

And before you know it you'll have a surplus of lanterns and headlamps he has "aquired" for you. Electro sheep is on par with the redoxx bag. They make one just for trainmen. You have to search the site for railroad bag or something along those lines. I've had mine for 5 years now and it's going strong. Lifetime warranty too. Do not get him a spike knife either. Or anything to do with trains. At all. Some nice phone chargers go a long way. A couple. Because he's sure to loose one. And they make some 74v-120v adapters that he can use to plug his phone into the outlets on the engines. |

Which rr is he hiring on with? I really doubt he needs wool socks in Tennessee. I have a few pairs but they're from when I worked up north. A good rain suit would be nice too. No frogg togg bullshit either. A nice suit from academy or even walmarks Coleman brand. That's what I've used for years now. |

As far as gloves go, put them in the same category as headlamps. He'll get shitloads of 'em for free.

His home base group of guys, I guess that's how you'd put it, rotate around to keep things fresh. Not sure that's unique to them but he'll play engineer one shift and hook trains together the next. So yeah, he's out in the yard from time to time. And us Southerners start pulling out sweatshirts when it gets into the 60s. So yeah, when the highs are in the 40s, we dress out like northerners would do for single digits |

My dad was 44 years on the railroad. Don't buy him anything that has to do with trains. As a matter of fact, we weren't allowed to have a train under the Christmas tree! Every year, my dad bought new boots and a new bag. The listng of the bag above seems like the best bet. I agree with the other posts above about PSE. He'll be issued everything he needs. Can't go wrong with quality rain gear.
On a side note, you can pass on some advice. My dad told me a story about a time he was walking the train during the middle of the night. He was about a half-mile from the engine he came upon a railroad police car on the siding. The cop was leaning on the hood and told him the he'd heard my dad coming for the past few minutes - whistling and singing in the middle of the night, making a whole lot of noise. He asked my dad if he was being loud to scare of any bears. My dads response - "Bears aren't a problem. They're usually more afraid of you than you are of them. I make noise to scare of the skunks!" |
