Neither of them were.  The .22 pistol was probably the best thing to come out of Ruger.

Only the Mark II.  They went downhill after that, like magazine safety.

I disagree.  The Ruger Mk II is about the most awesome semi auto 22 LR pistol ever created.  The only thing that comes close is the Browning Buckmark.

The P series was affordable and dependable. However slide safeties are dumb, and even the poly framed one weighed a god damned ton (it has like 8 oz on a G17 )

The Mini 14 sucked, but I hear it sucks less these days.

Neither are "awesome".

Actual awesome guns Ruger make/made:

GP100, Mk2, 10/22

This is a joke right?  Mini 14 has the worst accuracy and the P series is a brick with a plastic grip on it.

I had a Mini 14 at one time.  I actually regret selling it.  But I did trade it in to get it''s granddaddy.

I have mostly sold my collection as I near retirement and it is one of the few rifles I regret selling.  My Weimar republic transition M98 Mauser is another.  Absolutely beautiful rifle.  1918 Danzig with the later 98K rear sights on it.  I love long rifles and this one was a work of art to me.

I haven't owned a pistol in over 40 years and never really missed not having one.

It's decent, but nowhere close to the most awesome semi auto .22 pistol.  S&W mod 41 and most of the High Standards outclass it and you not even getting to the high grade target pistols.

How do they outclass it?  They are awesome pistols, but if you take the price of the Mk II, coupled with it's reliability and accuracy, then add in all the aftermarket modifications you can make to it, it is pretty darn hard to beat.

This.  Mini-14?  P-series?

GP100 is a great blaster, gobbles up all the magnum you can stuff in it.  That's why I bought one.  But great?  Fucking brick, I'd hate to carry that chunk of steel very far.

#1 is elegant, but accuracy is hit-or-miss.  Red Label is heavy enough to be crew-served.  And did the Mk II have to be a challenge to mechanical engineers to take apart?

P94 was the first firearm I bought after my 21 birthday,  shortly after 9/11. It was heavy, but the trigger was decent and I was fairly accurate with it.  I was new to pistols and fed it the cheapest junk I could find. Not a single misfire.  I bought it for 285.  Also own a 10-22 and a SR22.  Sold the P94 about a year ago and upgraded to a S&W M&P full size.  Sale price was same as purchase price.

It's easy taking a Mk II apart, it's the putting it back together that can be a challenge.

The P series, like my old P85 is built like a tank, weighs 1/2 as much. BUT will eat ANYTHING you feed it. The mini, hit or miss.  The op did neglect to mention the Speed Six. the one i have is AWESOME!

Yep, the MK I/II/III, #1/#3, Blackhawk/Superblackhawk, and the 10/22 are all Ruger firearms that are very popular and have had very, very long production runs for good reason.  The P series and Mini 14 are not the best at what they do.  In fact they are commonly thought of as mediocre, and there are reasons for their lack of popularity.

Ruger revolvers: good. MkII: good.
10/22: great idea poorly executed that the aftermarket has stepped up and made decent. If they would just sell receivers for 50% of what they charge for the complete rifles they'd really be on to something.

Single Six is awesome.

Blackhawk is awesome (especially the Old Model or a 50th Anniversary Model).

Security / Service / Speed Six are awesome, and better than the GP-100.

My SP-101 is a great little revolver, and my Mk II has introduced scads of people over the years to the shooting sports

A few years ago I tried one of their ARs, and it seemed pretty solid for the afternoon I got acquainted with it.

Aside from that, when I think Mini-14 I think A-Team bullet hose, with mags that might as well be priced by HK

ETA: Forgot about the 10/22s ... love 'em!

If you take the time to look at the specs a similar S&W is the same weight.  Probably best stick with plastic pistols.
