Well fuck me running. Spending the weekend in Austin, guess I should watch some news.

Chief says officer that took shooter down was holding horses with one hand and shot at shooter with the other. Have not confirmed if he hit shooter or if the shooter did himself at the same time.
|
|
Chief also described repeatedly a "fusillade" of "bullets" fired.

Wasn't planning on venturing out of the house today anyway - now even more so.

Just prepping people who may not pay attention for the impending statements about his assault rifle, weapons of war, etc. Some previous gems from when good old Art thought it would be a good idea to argue with people on twitter: gun owners against UBCs have "lying extremist undeveloped brain." "police chiefs have supported UBC long before this POTUS & will continue doing so long after he leaves office." In another tweet, Acevedo mocked concerns that universal background checks will curtail personal liberty and infringe on the the 2nd Amendment itself: "Oh, no the horror, gun profiteers can't sell guns to criminals and nuts." Austin got a real winner when they hired that fucknut. |

"APD Headquarters has been evacuated. A suspect has been shot and his condition is unknown at this time," the police said in a subsequent tweet. The police later confirmed that a single male suspect had died.
The police said the man took aim at the department headquarters and other nearby buildings before being shot himself by at least one officer. No police officers were injured, according to the APD. Agreed. Only updates are that I-35 is still shut down. ETA.. shooter is deceased. No LEO injured. And that makes it just about perfect! |

Individual is 50ish white male Austin resident. APD, FBI, Marshals, Homeland Sec at his house now. APD officer holding reins of 2 horses shot one time at shooter, unknown if that was killing shot or suicide. Bullet-proof glass was penetrated by rounds.

The shooting incident was declared over by police by 6 a.m. Eastern, but a section of the primary highway through Austin, I-35, remained closed until about 7:30 a.m., when police confirmed it had reopened in both directions.

Oddball situation.
Lots of gear and rounds fired, but with zero attempt at actually hurting someone? Blowing out windows of buildings at 5am? I smell a hint of the crazy.

Genuinely want to know... maybe some cops on this site can chime in. If you are in the Police HQ and are under attack, are you safer evacuating or safer staying?

Quoted from CNN:
Authorities have not offered a motive, but the police chief said that the shooter's "violent anti-government behavior" -- as evidenced by attacking buildings that belong to Mexico's government, the U.S. government and, in the police headquarters, the city government -- may have come from ongoing and often vitriolic debates in society.
"Our political discourse has become very heated and sometimes very angry, and sometimes the rhetoric is not healthy," Acevedo said, adding that the divisive immigration debate "comes to mind," given that the federal courthouse and Mexican Consulate were targeted. "... I would venture, based on my training and experience, that the political rhetoric might have fed into some of this." Recent update:
AUSTIN, Texas - Police say a gunman fired more than 100 rounds at the Mexican Consulate, Austin police headquarters and other downtown buildings before he was killed. At a press conference Police Chief Art Acevedo said a police sergeant shot at the gunman, who was about 50, early Friday outside the police station. Acevedo says it's not clear if police fatally shot the suspect or if he took his own life. The sergeant, who had just completed a mounted horse patrol, was holding the reins to two horses when he fired. The gunfire was reported at 2:22 a.m. Friday, Assistant Police Chief Raul Munguia said earlier today. Acevedo said officers who approached the suspect saw cylinders in his nearby vehicle and discovered he was wearing a vest they thought may be rigged to explode. Officers retreated and a bomb squad was called. It was later determined the items were not explosive. View Quote |

The sergeant who shot him was awesome. He held the reins of two horses in one hand and shot the criminal with the other. Just like an old western movie.
