The Royal Navy may ask US squadrons to fly off its new aircraft carrier following delays to its new F35B fighters, BBC Newsnight has learned. MoD insiders said the US Marine Corps would be offered the use of HMS Queen Elizabeth for flight operations. The UK plans to have its first F35 squadron operational by 2018, but Newsnight has learned that there may be further delays. |

I'm sure we'd be glad to help out by lending them a couple of squadrons since lockmart is holding up their planes.

How big is the HMS Queen Elizabeth compared to say a Nimitz or Ford class CVN?
eta- so let get this straight, we're going to loan them to the Brits? Why don't we just take the ones the Brits are getting in return? |

We're going to (potentially) base some USMC squadrons (our jets, our pilots) on their carrier for a few years. I suppose it'll give their crew a chance to practice operations with active squadrons, but I don't know how it would go in an actual war if we wanted the boat to go somewhere or they wanted the planes to shoot something for them. |

But, but no one but the US Marines wanted the B models and the Marines end up fucking up everything.

So they sold us their old Harriers and now dont have the F35B. So are they asking us to fly their....I mean our Harriers off their Carrier until they get our...er I mean their new F35B's up and flying?
Seems like a great symbiotic relationship we have going |

The Marines will certainly enjoy the traditional daily rum ration. They won't have to try to hide their booze that deployment.

Are they going to be seconded to the RN or are they going to remain an intact, self-contained USMC unit that just happens to be under another nation's naval command? I know the USMC has done the former (with other countries) in the past.

If it were a real carrier instead of a ski jump ship they would be able to operate existing aircraft.
|
|
Wonder if maybe it's a sort of half truth. A mixed squadron to reacquaint the RN with carrier ops. After all, when those ships and aircraft go into service the UK will have had quite a gap with a certain level of institutional knowledge lost especially with fixed wing.

So, the Brits are going to get an airwing, plenty of deck handling and ship handling training, combined ops training, while the Marines get a full deck to themselves without having to be the bastard children on a Navy carrier. Minus all the F-35 bullshit, this is a win/win for both countries and both branches. I also foresee an increase in Brit/USMC pilot exchange programs, giving the Brits a cadre of carrier qualified jocks, and a future conflict where dropping onto an allied deck is as casual as landing at home.
Not seeing this as a bad thing. Until the Navy gets jealous and wants to join the party. |

In all honesty, that is probably going to be one of the most fun floats ever. The British military are always a fun time to hang out with, in my experience at least.

Absolute genius.
A Trojan horse operation for America to recapture her ancestral homeland. Quite brilliant. Don't fret, British Arfcommers ... you'll like Waffle House and brodozers. |

I was thinking about this more. I'd probably support our Marines bombing whatever the British wanted them to.

I wouldn't put too much credence into the thoughts of a former British Army officer on what the Royal Navy and RAF might do.
That said, if the QE is operational, you can bet your bottom dollar she'll be flying something, and that something will probably be F-35B's (if only because they won't want to waste the money certifying AV-8B's). Would we provide a USMC air wing? Probably; though it wouldn't shock me if it had a lot of RN/RAF 'exchange' pilots in it. Plenty of time to redirect their exchange pilots to the 'correct' squadrons. It would only make sense to operate one of these big ships with Helos-only as a LHA/LPH if HMS Ocean was unavailable, and she just got out of the yard. It's not like the UK goes anywhere without us anyway, if we had to 'loan' a squadron. |
|
Send them AB-8B's for the interim. I am sure they can go right into flying them.

You're going to let Marines on a ship named after a woman? You do realize that the ship WILL become pregnant.
|
|
Sounds good to me, I'm sure US pilots with carrier experience could probably help them work out the kinks in their new ships.
