Hear me out. The first Thanksgiving had turkey and potatoes because that's what they had available. I have prime rib, lobster, rib eye, shrimp available. Why would I eat a turkey?

It's just one day, you can eat all that other stuff later. Enjoy your Turkey!

Once a year having turkey is plenty.  To me it is dry and needs to be covered in gravy or Miracle Whip to be edible.

Hell if I know.  I've got 22 minutes til fo time and the bird still has 8 degrees to rise.  What a pain in the ass.

It's Thanksgiving, man.  It's the one day people eat shit that they wouldn't even think of eating the rest of the year.

"Hey, you know what would be good?  If we mixed these vegetables with cranberries and MARSHMELLOWS."

I agree OP, much better stuff out there.

That said I'm also a traditionalist.

I don't care for turkey lunch meat.  The only way turkey is decent is if a whole bird is brined and roasted or fried.  So I take the time to do one a year.  That satisfies me on turkey for another year.

Actually the first thanksgiving had venison which is a generic term for wild game. If you don't like turkey you could try deer or pheasant.

Op is fail! Thanksgiving is complete with the turkey. Christmas is for prime rib/roast beast.

You must make it the way my mom does: like shit.

This year, I brined a whole bird overnight and smoked it for four hours. About to cut it.

Because that's the traditional meal.  We usually have something different like prime rib on Christmas.

Because if you don't, you can't have "Beige Day" on Black Friday.

What is "Beige Day" you ask?  Open face turkey sandwich on white bread, covered in gravy, with mashed potatoes and butter.

Agreed! Mother in law brought a whole turkey which I carved up but she was the only person to eat any. Everyone else ate ham.

Unless I shot the damn thing myself, I don't eat turkey.

Ham, roast pig make for better holiday foods.

And they're more appreciated.

Because turkey is awesome when cooked properly.  Today we did a 20 lb bird, brined overnight, filled with onion, apples and oranges, slathered with butter and cajun seasoning ... then 500 degrees for 20 minutes for the perfect brown, then loosely covered and cooked at 325 until it hits exactly 161 degrees, then out for a 30 minute rest. Incredibly juicy, not dry at all. Also made real gravy with the drippings, but it went to the stuffing and potatoes.

We cook up 5 Or 6 turkeys a year just because its so good....and we live in beef country.  Helps that my dad raises heritage turkeys.
