I have one complete AR, three lowers and approximately 60 magazines of various vintage. Maybe 20-25 Pmags. I buy 10-20 per year and throw away dud mags.

I like the idea of having 30 mags minimum per rifle. That would be 10 kept loaded and ready for action, 10 more that can be used as range mags and another 10 held in reserve (new in the wrap) for use as replacements for mags that get lost, broken or just eventually wear out. And I'd honestly feel better if I had 50 per. You can just never have enough magazines when you want a firearm to last the rest of your life as well as your children's lifetime. And depending on the political climate, they might need to last that long. So I want as many extras as possible.
Hell, now that I think of it, I just realized I have 10 new factory mags for a Smith and Wesson M&P handgun that I don't even yet own. But I know that sooner or later I'll buy one or more of those pistols, so I am stocking up on mags while they are available. |
Why put a number on it? Mags (and ammo) are just something I buy when they are cheap and I have a few extra pesos.
Are we using pesos yet? |
You can buy mags for less than $10.00 each, buy a metric shit ton, there will be a panic again, sell then.
Just ordered 10 more gen 3 30's today for $84 shipped. So to answer your question, idk. I originally said ten per gun but that's spiraled out of control.
As many as you can fully load, then buy ammo, rinse and repeat.
I have lots of mags.
I also think it's cheaper to replace than fix, but salvage the spare parts just in case. |
I have over 100 mags for 3 rifles in 5.56, 16 for one 9mm AR, 13 for one .22 AR and only 3 for my 6.8

It does not matter how many you have. You will need one more than you have.
However many you think you might need in case someday you can't buy any new ones.
I don't think you can ever have enough when you factor in any future bans that may come along, or a SHTF scenario.
I have about 6 30 rounders and 6 20 rounders in active rotation for the AR's I shoot often, but have probably have 5-6 dozen of each stashed away. As finances allow, I'll buy more from time to time and just stash them away. |
My goal was to fill a 16 gallon container full of mags, now that I have filled it I still look for deals and now is the time to buy as many mags as you can afford.

X+1 with X being the number I currently own.
Because they are a disposable as opposed to durable item. you never know when the legislature is going to go full retard Sometimes you just gotta neck beard |
Correct answer is however many you think you need, plus some extras to account for breakage in case there are bans later.
With the price of AR mags nowadays, 10 is a good number, can get for under $100 now. |
I think I have somewhere around 40 for each rifle................but can always use more

Hi--first post. I recently put together a AR-15 and my plan is to only have one, I mostly hunt with and own a number of leverguns, but felt the need to own a AR-15. So I have two questions: 1). How many magazines do I really need? 2). How many 30-rnd and how many 20-rnd mags? if this question has been asked before I apologize in advance...I also want to thank you for your time and input... View Quote As many as I fucking want! |

I just look at them as storage devices. Buy 'em cheap, great way to store 30 rounds. It's a lot more convenient to grab an ammo can full of loaded mags before going shooting than it is to fill a couple of them over and over, and just refill at your leisure. Makes a great snowstorm-bound task.
I don't know exactly how many I have. A few. |
Don't forget ammo. Get a case of 1,000 55gr M193 or 62 gr M855, a magloader and load up all of your new mags.
My goal is 10 per weapon
I have more than one AR, and I have 2 Dozen or so - I honestly don't know. I try to buy stuff like this 1 or so at time when I have extra few bucks Every time I do an order for parts -'I alwasy add 1 magazine for one of my primary items |
I want as many as I can afford!
If it pisses off the anti-gunners....I WANT IT! I have MANY magazines and just bought 20 more Pmags! I hope Barbara Boxer has a panic attack because I bought more magazines!! |

You need enough mags to last you the rest of your life,
If society breaks down and you need it for firefights. If you are under 40 and have infantry combat experience and are in shape, you need at least 7 for a basic combat load. More to replace the ones you lose, break, etc. If you are over 40, out of shape, and have no infantry combat experience, you probably only need 1. |
These little rules of thumb, like ten per AR, were fine until lowers dropped to $30.

Thanks GD for helping on this Black Friday week. Friday is not even here and I have went over my budget. I have 15 pmags, all 30 rounders. So I now have another 10 pk from dsg on the way, also two 40's a ten and a twenty.
Get a few extra while the prices are so cheap...chances are this wont be your only AR.

I have three 30 rnd and one 20 rnd mags. I feel funny having this many with only one AR15. You're kidding? Right? I don't shoot that much so it'll be a long time before I wear 'em out. Then again, if the SHTF I'll need more so I'll get more before that happens. How do you know when the SHTF will happen? They are historically cheap right now. $8 pmags? BUY!! |

how many?? dude, they are like $6.99 right now.
if gasoline was $1.00 a gallon for the next 30 days, would you just fill your cars gas tank.. or would you go buy a shitload of 55 gallon drums and stuff your garage full?? im up to around 50-70 mags per rifle and no where near done. im planning more guns, and many, many more mags. but then again, im thinking of the next run on gun parts / attempt to ban mags n stuff.. big money. those $6.99 mags today, will be $50.00 mags after some future mess resulting in attempted gun bans. |
I'm happy with about all the loaded ones I could probably carry, being about 10, even though I do have more than that. I keep one 20 rounder on hand for deer hunting just because it's a bit lower profile.

Maybe this will give you a hint as to how many are required.
We moved recently and I found I had a Rubber Maid bin packed with magazines..................I thought I only had two Rubber Maid bins holding magazines..........I forgot about the third one. |
