Hi--first post. I recently put together a AR-15 and my plan is to only have one, I mostly hunt with and own a number of leverguns, but felt the need to own a AR-15.
So I have two questions: 1). How many magazines do I really need? 2). How many 30-rnd and how many 20-rnd mags? if this question has been asked before I apologize in advance...I also want to thank you for your time and input... |

A dozen..?
You are stocking up for future bans and also for SHTF, I need this gun in my car to cross Ferguson, MO.. You don't know when or where the next ferguson or LA will happen. In case it is near you or you have to go help someone who gets caught in it then you will need something. Carry 6 have another 6 or so in case they are damaged in the future.. |
I have three 30 rnd and one 20 rnd mags. I feel funny having this many with only one AR15.
Someone on here once said 10 per rifle...sounded good to me so that's how I started.

Magazines wear out and are prone to breakage.
Buy enough to fit your needs, then stock up on replacements when prices are low. Take advantage of ongoing holiday sales, like the $8 PMags right now. The smart a** answer to your question is: 87 |
The general rule around here is 10 per rifle. Split the size up however you like. I buy mags whenever I see good deals. I will never be without. I currently own 13 AR's and 468 magazines.

View Quote You don't need any 20 rounders. Mags don't last forever and they are cheap as heck right now. During ban years I have seen them go as high as $50 Each! After a crisis like Newtown they went up to $20 IF you could find them. I have 10 per rifle in a box that I never use. I have 6 mags that just don't work that great due to bent feed lips and weak springs and I use them at the range only and have them marked. I wont use these during any competitions. For you , I would get a 10 pack. Dedicate a few for the range and keep the rest in the wrapper. Later, if on sale buy 10 more. |

All of the magazines.
But seriously, I don't have a number. I think you should at least have one load out plus spares and range mags. Which would be around 15-20. I keep buying them and figure the more I have the better. |

I have 300 some 30,40,50,60quad,100quad,100 betas and still buying not including AR180 mags never enough!

10 minimum. Even if you're poor you should be able to afford that right now. Your best investment is buying magazines on the bottom of the market like it is now, and they can serve you dual purpose in the future. They can save your life, or be traded/sold for much more.

I would just add that a few 10 round magazines would be nice so you can easily shoot off a bag or a shorter bipod. 30 rounders are too tall for this.
And PSA has D&H metal 30 round mags for 5.99 each. And DSG has a 10 pack of 30 round Gen 3 Magpuls for $80 with $5 shipping. I would do one of those deals. |

The correct answer is and always will be: 1 or 2 more. View Quote I agree...it only takes a riot and unjust federal charges and a railroading trial drug out to the next election to get scumbags put into office. |

I would have 10 quality 30 rounders for shtf/whatever stored away and then 5 for the range/truck/other uses. But you can have 1,000 mags that are useless if you don't have ammo to fill them.
I have so many mags I don't even know the number I have. I'm of the opinion that you can never have enough mags
Considering that magazines are the cheapest they have EVER been, there is no reason not to stock up.
This Black Friday a vendor is selling new D&H magazines WITH a Magpul Gen III follower installed for $6.50. That has got to be close to cost to produce them. |
Just received special from DSG....about 85.00 shipped for 10.
Having a few 5 rounders in addition to your 30's is always nice for bench work or comparing different loads.

Thank you all for the replys and advice--ordered 16 D&H 30-rnds from PSA ($5.99) and a good friend of mine will sell me 10 new Colt 20-rnd mags cheap...so it begins...

View Quote I have 1200 now at an average cost of $8 a mag, mostly Pmags, but some USGI, lancers, etc. Most are for investment, and the rest for my rifles, and for my kids, and grandkids. They are so cheap now. Buy them cheap and stack them deep. I sold off 500 I had during the last panic at an average sales price of $43.69. Better than gold in my opinion. Rest assured, another panic will happen, and you will look back at the current prices, and laugh, assuming you bought all you could.. The prices today are nearing rock bottom, and in my opinion, the best I have ever seen. Just picked up 48 Troy Battlemags for $300 shipped, that's $6.25 per mag delivered to your door. Save the hate on Troy, as these will be sold during the next panic. Just too damn cheap to pass up! |
I have 75 magazines. I think I need all of them.
What good is a rifle without ammo? |

When you go to shoot at the range, how do you want to spend your time, loading a mag over and over again, or have a bunch and spend your time shooting?
They are less than 20 bucks each. Why go light on the mag supply? I remember reading a minimum of 15 per gun. That made sense to me. Your thousand dollar gun, can't run without that 20 dollar mag. Think about it.
I feel more than comfortable with 7 mags for each of my AR and AK respectively
I have over 30 per rifle. I'm working on 10 per pistol too, but they're so damn expensive to buy all at once. (I have a lot of pistols)
Right now I have two magazines for the AR and I hope to add a third by the end of the year.

I'd wait till the next crisis , then boost your post count asking where you can buy AR mags for less than $50 each.
We have magazines for firearms no longer owned. Same for ammo. |
I have ~50 per rifle, all loaded.
And 20 rd mags are great for shooting prone or from the bench. I need more mags. |

"TWO MORE, SERGEANT MAJOR!!!"
