PETERSBURG, Fla., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. have joined forces in pursuit of a contract to supply a new 9mm handgun to the U.S. Army. The firearm, for the Army's Modular Handgun System solicitation, will be based on Smith & Wesson's M&P polymer pistol platform, which features a reinforced polymer chassis and ambidextrous controls and which is carried by law enforcement personnel around the world. "This partnership combines General Dynamics' proven legacy in manufacturing military armaments with Smith & Wesson's extensive experience in designing and manufacturing firearms for commercial applications," This partnership combines Smith and Wesson's mediocre pistols and General Dynamics retired generals and former congressman, combining lobbyist and engineer... They phased out the best handgun of the last hundred years the 1911, it worked then and still works, 45 ball is still better than 9mm ball, just like the adoption of the m16 in the 60s the Beretta was adopted because somebody at Beretta greased some palms.

why reinvent the wheel? just buy the Glock 17 or 19 This. Worked for the Brits. Who carry them in condition 3 IIRC... That's worse than carrying a DA/SA with a safety, at least I can draw and fire an M9 with one hand. |

American procurement system: millions and millions spent just figuring out what 9mm pistol to buy. Will probably overpay per-pistol once that is finished, if ever.
Brit procurement system: Poppycock, guv'nah! Our Brownings are worn out! KRIKEY! Bob's your uncle, go buy a bunch of Glock 17s. Righty-ho, m'lord! Sigh. |

Everyone realizes how insignificant sidearms are in military use, correct? At least, in the case of 9mm or any other straight-walled pistol cartridge.
Once you go bottle-necked, things change quickly, and you now have a cartridge for PDW use that has significant effective range. That is the direction we should be looking. The performance capabilities of the 7.62x25 should be a baseline, from which to build. |

I could go for a FNX-9 Tactical. The entrants from the JCP program that turned up on the non-mil market were pretty awesome. I like my FNX-45 Tac a lot.
Didn't I just read an article somewhere that the Army ordered another hundred thousand M9s though? This will just be another JCP, we'll see some pretty cool 9mm designs and the Army will still be buying M9s until small handheld projected energy weapons become feasible. |

PDW's are stupid for replacing a pistol, if you need a PDW, get a rifle. If you're so highspeed that a PDW is more effective... then your training is probably light years ahead of some one who's only T/O weapon is a handgun. |

I just hope they go DAO with no safety. View Quote Everybody gets a 92D to replace their M9. Upgrading the old M9's to a "D" would be easy, its a slide change, and the removal of the single action sear, even easier if they decided to go with the "DS" variant, which is a DAO 92FS, (Double action only, with the safety on the slide), just pull the single action sear, and bam, its DAO, with a safety. |

This is idiotic. Its clear that the F-35 can be modified to fufill this mission. It will require only a slight redesign and a small increase in funding.
