First time home buyer. Bought a 2007 year construction, two story house. I have a month before my current lease is up so I'm doing a bunch of re-painting, and it's got me so excited I am curious what other cool things I can do in the meantime.

Epoxy garage floor is on the list.

What cool things have you done?

Best thing I did was upgrading tile in my master bath.

Considering I had to all but kick the previous owner out on closing day, this may be in my future.

Display them for a month or so then throw them away. Winter time I can leave them out there for months.

Sounds lovely.  Is that something you picked up from Martha Stewart, or was that your own creation?

Not exactly cool but I change out the hardware. Most times the hardware is pretty worn and those kinda things are the first things you see and touch. Maybe put up a new outside light if its pitted and tarnished, new kickplate if appropriate.
Maybe change out the builder's grade faucets.

continually "harden" your home. i don't mean add AR500 plate over the windows. i mean, take simple steps to improve your house's durability against not only a large storm like a hurricane but also against other more common storms. for example, cut tree limbs away from the roof area. cut down trees that endanger the house itself. ensure water runoff is away from, and not towards the house. etc etc etc.

these are all little things, but they add up AND most importantly they "uncomplicate" your overall homeownership experience. it's bad enough that there is a hurricane and there is no power for days. a tree in your living room is an unwanted problem. so "harden" against problems that are created by weather, insects, and other.  for example, water getting behind a gutter invariably leads to soffit and/or fascia board rot. and that same water can lead to pooling and drainage issues below, which can lead to basement mold etc.

I'll be there soon, I hope. Current house is on the market. I'm going to try to get a smaller place. Current house is 2160sq ft and I'm single with no kids. I have a roommate, but won't after the house sells. Couple places I'm looking at are about 1300 and 1500sq ft. I'd probably just paint a few walls. Epoxy on the garage floor would be nice, but you have to get up all the grease and oil first. I'm thinking I might just try to go with those interlocking plastic squares instead. I'm not sure though. Gotta see how the money part plays out!

#1: Wired, connected smoke detectors, one in every room.
#2: RG6, Cat6, phone to each room, two Cat6/RG6 to anywhere you might put a TV.
#3: Change any standard bowl toilets to elongated bowl.
#4: Install a pull-down attic stair unit if one isn't already installed.
#5: Add a proper ceiling fan-rated box to each bedroom, run 3-wire from the switch to the fan, one switch for lights, one for fan.

We just closed on a new construction(cookie cutter) house and I'm currently repainting the subs shit work and antique glazing the fireplace mantle. We are also replacing all the cheap lightbulbs the builder used with high lumen bright white and natural daylight bulbs.

Oh and congrats on the house!

Get rid of all the linoleum (if there is any) and replace it with tile - because if you don't do it now you WILL do it later.
If it has natural gas, see if you can plumb a line out to your back side so you can have the option of installing a natural gas grill (even though you already have a charcoal/wood grill).

How do I do this when I have a 2 story home? I don't have attic space over the first floor to accomplish this. How would I?

Thank you!

I knew there was something I was forgetting on my planned renovations

Basement has an electric heater while the rest of the house is gas. Want to fix that, but I know it's going to be expensive

CEILING FANS

These were the single biggest 'upgrade' to our house when we purchased it.

My house was built in 1996.  My wife and I bought it in 2013 and we were the first to add ceiling fans to the other bedrooms (master bedroom had a ceiling fan).  The other two bedrooms were literally just empty boxes with no lighting.  4 walls and some windows and that was it.  We added ceiling fans within a few weeks of moving in and they vastly improved those rooms: moving air + actual lighting.

Try to get fans that have an included remote control.  If not, spend $30/fan and get an aftermarket remote control kit.  We have one per bedroom and they're absolutely worth every penny.
