CHICAGO (AP) -- More than 30 horses died in a stable fire in suburban
Chicago over the weekend, with distraught owners of the animals
arriving Sunday to lay flowers at the site, a fire department official
said.

The fire Saturday occurred 50 miles northwest of Chicago at
Valley View Acres, a boarding facility that offers horseback-riding
lessons and also trains thoroughbreds and show-jumping horses.

As
firefighters arrived before midnight Saturday, the stable's owners were
running around the complex looking for ways to lead horses to safety,
Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Chief Paul Deraedt said in a phone interview.

They were frantic," he said about the stable's owners, Tyson and Amber
Bauman. "But nothing could have survived the conditions inside. ... They
are devastated."

Just found out a friend of mine, and fellow horse trainer, used to work and train there.

Absolutely tragic.

The horse farm that I used to work at burned down when I was in high school.
Some of the horses escaped but tried to make it back into their stalls while the barn was on fire.
I held them by their halters while the FD put out the flames. I buried 6 of them. It was a very bad day.
Consequently I joined the Fire Department about 2 years later. Unfortunately the horse barn was rebuilt and burned down again a few years ago. I did not know the new owners but it was a sad situation. Friends of mine that lived close by said that they could hear the screams and kicking. I'm glad that I missed that call

WTF, electrical?  What a horrible thing.  Hopefully the animals were overcome by carbon monoxide/dioxide before the heat got to them.

The first one was never confirmed but it was believed to be arson. There were many multi million dollar race horses with big insurance coverages.
Second was electrical. I believe that it started with the control box for the electric fencing.
