Found this link from the Messerschmidt thred.  Really pretty interesting, how they dealt with things after being just about bombed into the stone age.  We really did fuck them up; a guy I know told me they were still repairing war damage on up into the '80s, and I believe it.  Sad deal, especially for the women, kids, and old people.  But well, they did start that war.

And now they're the industrial powerhouse of Europe, once again. Sympathy? No. They don't need it, it's useless. Germans are a pretty resilient, resourceful bunch.

Yes they are!  They are pretty much the envy of Europe.  How could the Greeks have become such assclowns?  Really, how could any country be so stupid as to get itself trillions and trillions of dollars into debt?  Good thing we're not like that...

They fucked themselves over.  While Hitler never won a majority in an election (he did win a plurality), he enjoyed widespread support until the war started to go badly for them.

Had to Wiki that.   Yea, prolly not their fave guy.  I work for a German company now, and one of the guys I know was having some work-related debate with a Kraut, and he told him, "You know, that kind of thinking is why you lost that war."  Needless to say, the German guy didn't find it very funny.

A number of books out there about post war Germany.  Not a good time to be a German especially '45-50.  Kind of surreal to think about how quickly they bounced back.  West Germany that is.  East was still living the basics well into the 80s.

I was a college exchange student in Germany, 1987.  History "stamtisch" in the small town of Straubing, I commented that I thought Germany should, and would be reunited sometime in my lifetime.  I was branded an ignorant foreigner who couldn't understand the necessity of the separation, and was told that such talk could be considered "neo-nazi".  Well, guess I was right, but that guilt complex runs deep.

OP, my Ph.D. is in engineering - not history.

BUT, I am also a retired regular U.S. military officer who served many years in NATO.

So I have some perspective on Germany.

I believe that we, and our allies, figured out in 1946 that Stalin was a very dangerous man and there was real concern about him trying to invade Western Europe.

So it became apparent to our government and other allies that building up the destroyed Germany back into a viable ally would help act as a buffer to Stalinist aggression and expansion.

The economic stability of Germany would also contribute to a stable Western Europe.  Thus, the Marshall Plan came about to rebuild European economies.

I found the Germans to be intelligent and hard working and a capable NATO ally.  They also treated me, as a U.S. military officer, with respect and courtesy.

Please bear in mind that most Germans living today were not even born yet back during World War II.

Most Germans today regret World War II just as much as we do.   And they suffered a hell of a lot more than we did, in the end, for their mistakes.

Western Europe  recovered with about 13 billion dollars in aid  from the US.  That amount would be equal to approximately 130 billion today.

My dad had to stay in Europe after the war, hauling German soldiers back to Germany.

He said he never saw a more demoralized group. When the war ended they were simply dumped/ abandonded where ever they were.

Yes and no.  The First World War kicking off was a convoluted clusterfuck but I've heard it argued successfully that that war would not have escalated like it did if not for Germany's "diplomacy" leading up to it.

The way they recovered for both wars was impressive as hell though.

Everyone was hot for war. The French had an extremely bad itch to go get revenge for Sedan. The Germans were eager to give it a try. And the Austrians threw the first stone when they attached Serbia.

In the End, no, the Germans did NOT start it.

Well, Japan and half of Germany did. Having the US protect you from Soviet Expansion for 40 years kinda helps when you can focus the majority of your time and resources into social issues instead of national defense issues.

and no.

Germany made what was a small conflict between Austria-Hungary/Serbia/Russia into a world war.

Germany invaded France and Belgium.  Neither of whom were party to the conflict.

Germany wanted a war and fucking got it.
