Trying to get my wife a new car. I was never was interested in buying new, but after a combined 10 or so used cars over the years and the asspain occasionally involved with that (not to mention used just isn't the deal it used to be) we decided to go new.

Narrowed it down to an Accord or Crosstrek.

Accord has better gas mileage, is cheaper and appears to have better crash protection - but I just really like the idea of an AWD car for the snow (NE state) and she likes hatchbacks and listens to NPR; so the Subaru might be a better choice. She hates driving big cars so an actual SUV is out of the question.

Anybody have any thoughts?

No way in fuck am I posting a picture.

How snowy are we talking?  Hills?  How deep does the snow get before it gets plowed?

I've lived in NY and drove FWD 4-bangers since I was 18, minus a few years out of state.  I get around fine.  If you live out in the country where plows don't go, or are slow to go, or has hills, AWD may be more important.

Of the cars you listed, Accord.

I absolutely love AWD, but it's not worth being seen in a Subaru.

I've been driving Accords for a decade.

Next one will be an Accord or an Altima.

considering snow, AWD>all

go test drive one now in the snow, take off from a hill, etc. the difference should be apparent.

wifey loves her impreza

I have a 2013 Accord and really like it. 4 cyl 6spd manual. That being said I wish I had looked at the Crosstrek.  The hatch really appeals to me now that we have a dog. I really wish I had waited until the 2015 Subaru Legacy came out.  Looks like the Accord and has AWD.

If you don't mind a V6 and spending a bit more this offers the best of both worlds.  I know a few people that have them and love them.  Crosstour

AWD is not the same as all wheel stopping and all wheel cornering.
thus
I'll take an Accord with snow tires over a Crosstek with all seasons.

I was thinking about a Crosstek as a commuter so I don't have to drive my 4Runner everywhere. The Accord used to fill that role. I use real snow tires in the winter.

I want a new Accord myself.

This model is the first good looking Accord I've seen.

The problem is, they last so damn long, I never end up with a "new" one for long.

We've owned two Accords.
Both standard shift.

When we sold them, 1st had > 300K on the original engine, with only normal expected wear items replaced.
Second had > 200K on the original clutch, with normal wear items replaced.

We're now on a 2011 Odyssey, with 129K, and no failures yet.

I'm a firm believer in the Honda brand for quality and longevity.

Your priorities may differ.

Can't speak for the Subaru.

ETA: Accord ranked #1 recently for longest lasting vehicle.
Odyssey ranked #3.....

I have a 2001 accord with 240000 miles.
Hard to argue with that.

Get the Accord.  My 97 has 240K on it and still going strong.

The amazing thing is all the electrical still works: PW, PS, PDL, everything.

^^^^^^Yeah but mine's older^^^^^^

Just had a thread with some thoughts about the Subaru: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1686682_What_do_you_guys_think_of_the_Subaru_XV_Crosstek_thing_.html

Might be helpful.

I'd get the Crosstrek. My wife's Outback has been solid and I'm really impressed with its traction off-road and in the snow. I'd wager it will smoke a Grand Cherokee offroad. An Accord is nice, but it's, a Honda Accord.

I pass Accords and just about everything else driving to work in the snow, of course I have an Outback with Blizzacs.

We have a 2013 accord EX, 2014 Odyssey, 2010 Altima and a 2013 Subaru legacy   We have Bridgestone Blizzaks DM-V1
In snow Accord or any of the FWD cars WITH snow tires will be better than the Subaru with all season tires.  The Subaru with snows will be even better than the FWD. The accord EX 4 cyl is our favorite...rides great, uber reliable, looks great, and gets great fuel mileage from 31-37 on highway depending on conditions. We paid $25,500 using Yahoo auto quotes. Subaru is nice and rides well but only get in the low to mid 20's  and cost more

Where does OP live and what is your snow situation?

You could get around peg-legging or having TCS turn on every 5 seconds but that gets old really quickly if you need to put up with it more then a few days a year.

I have a '14 Accord Hybrid Touring. Absolutely love the car. It's fantastic.

No feedback regarding snow and Subaru though.   You will not go wrong with the Accord.

If you live in a snowy state the only answer is AWD/4WD.

IMO

Accord is more commuter+ luxury
Crosstrek is more commuter + weekend warrior

Drove FWD for years in snow.  If you don't have to go out in 3 feet before they plow FWD is fine.

I even did well with an 84 mercury Gran Marquis with studded snow tires and a couple bags of sand in the trunk.  I also had a 4wd pickup and AWD SUV.  They were both better than FWD.
