If you had no other choice which would you choose? Is birshot bad enough that you would rather have a .22?

I would go with a 10/22 with a few 25 rd mags loaded with CCI Stingers. poll inbound

Centerfire vs rimfire?

What size birdshot? Geese are birds. I'll take the reliability of centerfire if my life depended on it.

Turkey are birds, 3-1/2" 2+ ounces of #4 will fuck your shit up, especially from a proper turkey gun at close range.  Quit thinking all bird shot is #9.

CCI Stingers are lightweight hollow points, they will probably have LESS penetration than 2 ounces of #4 turkey shot.

There was a fucked up murder nearby my house earlier this year, the perp was high on marijuana and killed a good friend of his with depraved indifference, using BIRD SHOT.

Any shotgun birdshot before any .22LR.

I don't need any internet tests.  I have seen people shot at close range with shotgun birdshot.

Those of us that address the use of birdshot are often mis-quoted to say that it is "useless" for defense.  That is hogwash.

Buckshot is "better", but birdshot, especially in the larger sizes can be effective at close to medium in-the-home distances.

.22 long rifle will make a .220 dia. hole. 12 gage, #4 magnum will make a hole you can stick your fist through.

I gunned down a weasel once with 22 bird shot(cci) and a 9.5" ruger single six.  I shot him 12 times, yes reloaded, all within 60sec.  he finally jumped in a canal and I think drowned.  I skinned him out and not one of those shot penetrated the hide enough to cause death, a little bruising.  He must have had a heart attach.

After hitting enough rabbits and ducks under 10 feet and seeing them explode I think I would vote birdshot, big pellets though, none of that #8 nonsense.

I think birdshot would probably be better....though if I had to choose for myself I think I would go 10/22 with a bx25 magazine...just because I feel very comfortable with that rifle.

Depends on if I can wax slug my bird shot.......and what size shot.??

But probably go with .22 super sonic 40 grain anyway.

To anyone that hasn't exploded a few birds at close distance, this is pretty good demonstration of just how much energy that group of shot carries those first couple yards.

Try them out of a Charles Daly ultralight some time.

.22 is a very useful round, but I think I would still use birdshot in the #4 or larger for home defense.  That would be if I didn't have buckshot, which I do.  Hope I never have to find out.  I will be happy to go my whole life with just shooting four legged varmints or winged varmints only.

3 1/2 inch turkey shells are hell. Been there, done that. But one of those in someones face or pelvis going to reach a resolution between them and you. Guess who wins.

Bird shot, at close distance inside your house the shot will still be grouped tight and hit hard.

No matter how tight the group, when shot separates to the point that it is no longer in comlete physical contact, you are dealing with the energy of each individual projectile rather than energy of the 1/2- 1 1/2 ounce of the total load.

The larger the shot, the more energy in each individual projectle after shot separation.

It depends on what you're shooting the bird shot out of.  I'd take bird shot out of a 12 or even 20 gauge over .22 lr at indoor household ranges.
