300 sailors go out to sea. 150 couples return.
I kid. Any of the services are honorable. Thank you for volunteering. Though you should have went Army. |
|
Good luck squid.
And thank you in advance for your service. Now go give it hell. |

You haven't "went navy" until after you ship/graduate from their boot/job training.
Check back in when you actually do something besides take a test, a physical, and sign some random papers. and congrats for making up your mind. Hope you see it through. |

Touché!
My Marpat cover scored over the crackerjack cap in SoCal, however. We all get along in the end. |

AECF - Advanced Electronics/Computer field After basic electronics I get to chose or get told if I am an ET or FC http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/aecf.htm Only two Navy job specialties, called "ratings," are included in the Advanced Electronics / Computer Field: Electronics Technician ( ET) and Fire Controlman ( FC). The rating in which an Advanced Electronics / Computer Field candidate is trained is determined in the initial phase of the Advanced Electronics Technical Core Course in Great Lakes, Ill. However, eligibility requirements are the same for both ratings in the Advanced Electronics / Computer Field.
Jobs performed by ETs and FCs are performed throughout the Navy's fleet of surface ships including aircraft carriers and Aegis cruisers, and at repair activities ashore. ETs maintain and repair electronics equipment such as radar, communication and navigation equipment. FCs operate, maintain and repair the electronic, computer and control mechanisms used in weapons systems. These ratings comprise the basis of the ship's Combat Systems department aboard ships and are responsible for maintaining the ship's readiness for combat operations. |

After recruit training, you'll cross the street from Recruit Training Command and enter into Navy Training Command and wait to class up for Tech Core. Tech core will prepare you for "A" school by teaching you basic electrical and electronics theory, and then you'll head over to the strand building for Fire Control or Electronics Technician "A" school training. As someone already posted above, you may get to choose which way you go or they may choose for you based on the needs of the Navy. Not only are these two rates very different from each other, the specialties are diverse within each rate. An ET can specialize in radar or communication; these days ETs tend to "do it all". Now for Fire Controlman, they are two groups within our rate, group 1 non-Aegis technicians and of course, group 2 Aegis technicians. ETs = maintain gear for operators (climb the mast and fix their radar or comms equipment) FCs = maintain and operate their gear (stand watch on consoles in a dark room called Combat Information Center, monitor the tactical picture, fire missiles, AND fix their gear) |

AECF is Advanced Computer and Electronic Field. You'll be an Electronics Technician (ET) who works on comms, radar, and navigation equipment, or you'll be a Fire Controlman (FC) who works on radars or weapons systems. Both are excellent rates with good technical training, and can provide a good civilian career path after the Navy, if you choose to not stay in. I'm an ET, primarily a comms tech. And they'll pick your rate, based on line scores. |

Ratings have changed since I got out. I read it as Aviation Electrician also.

Hope the kid works out fine. He sure as fuck hasn't gone navy until he actually goes. |

Take my example: MK92 FCS (Frigate Combat System): Missiles, radar, 76mm gun system, cooling system, 2M micro-miniature electronic repair Close-in-Weapons System (CIWS): 20MM radar guided gun system Lockheed Martin COMBATSS-21: Combat Management System including consoles, displays, Sun servers, solaris operating system, Linux, Unix, Red Hat for an Electronic Warfare system Rolling Airframe Missile System (RAM): Sidewinder and Stinger components for close in defense Bofors MK 110 57MM Gun Weapons System I likely spent an equal amount of time specializing in Antiterrorism, Physical Security, and Law Enforcement both in operations and as an instructor; it's how the Surface Navy rolls. |
