There is a random red button on the wall in the basement of where i work.  no signs or warnings no cover.

Just a big red button.

seeking expert analysis on what this button is for.

go.

ETA: more info.

THis is at a hopsital.  This is in an corridor in the basement tunnel that connects two buildings.  It is a very low traffic area and is not near any patient care areas.

Could be an RTE - any doors near-by?

Fire suppression (as mentioned earlier - if Halon, don't phuck with it).

Or just hit and see what happens.  Could be for launching the entire nuclear arsenal.

Where do you work?  Looks like either an emergency gas shutoff or a fire suppression system dump.  Is it outside of any electronics rooms?

hopsital.  no electronics near by that i'm aware of.  Server room with halon system is in another portion of the building probably 1/2 mile away.

Maybe an air compressor E-stop?  I've seen those that aren't manual-reset in some places when the compressor uses an electromagnetic contactor.

ETA: Hospital?  Probably an emergency buzzer button.

Obviously, by starting this thread, you want to push it.

...Unless you work in a hospital.  Then I wouldn't push any unlabeled buttons.

Red buttons are always fine to push.  I seriously don't know why you haven't pushed the button already.

ETA: never mind, you work in a hospital.  The red button will probably open all the doors to the ebola quarantine chambers.

No, no.  You dont "push" the red button.  You caress it, lick it...

there is not one that watches the button directly (at least that i can see) but there is in the corridors immediately adjacent to either end of this hallway.  the cameras would capture my egress no matter which way i went.

Halon system cut on at work one day.
Small 20x20 control room, not a good day. Cause was some wiring error involving a maintenance repair and A/C system.

There's no sign that says "Do Not Push", therefore, there's no reason not to push it.
You want to push it.
You need to push it.
Just thinking about it makes you want to push it.
Go ahead.
Push it.

Push.

The

Button.
