The media.

I don't believe that the vast majority of people are that stupid that, presented with the actual facts, would continue to believe in liberalism.

The media are nothing more than propagandists and I believe that all of our problems stem from this.

Not a fan, but what did eight years of Republican reign get us?  Massive increase in the size of government.

While the source is questionable, the concept applies:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith
2. From spiritual faith to great courage
3. From courage to liberty
4. From liberty to abundance
5. From abundance to complacency
6. From complacency to apathy
7. From apathy to dependence
8. From dependence back into bondage

We are firmly entrenched in 7. and quickly headed towards 8.

Being a consumer culture rather than a producer.  Americans have priced themselves out of competing in the world labor market.  Why pay an American $20/hr. when you can pay some guy in a third world or developing country $1/hr. to make the same thing.  It's a general trend that's been ongoing for decades and it just keeps getting worse.  Yay, capitalism!

Shitty parenting.  Maybe if the Michael Browns of the world had parents who stressed the importance of work and education instead of rap and getting high, we wouldn't have the problems we have today....

Over the course of their lifetime, the average American consumes much more than they actually produce/contribute to society.

Pay television programming.
It started out that you payed for it because it was commercial free.  Now it's to the point where the public believes "reality programming" is real.  The general public are mindless drones that just emulate what they see on Cable/Satellite television.

Dropping pay television might even help to reduce obesity.

The spirit of competition.  More and more we are being led by a bunch of whiners who spend more time rigging the rules of the game than actually leading anyone anywhere.  We try to figure out how to keep our opponent's supporters out of the polling places.  We try to shout down politicians when they are making speeches.  And more and more we are resorting to throwing a temper tantrum and destroying our cities when things don't go our way.  All the while everyone looks to the .gov for a handout.  We're all on the dole.
