The fact that people keep repeating the "can't see the man overboard" meme, now that's retarded. Not only was the old school Navy work uniform blue, but the blue camo pattern is one of a family that included woodland and desert, and we have repeatedly had people explain to us here that even a blaze orange uniform isn't going to do much to make a person easier to see. |

was on a Navy base a few weeks back for work, I kinda like it, but they were all saying the same thing, it's so they don't have to look for you when you fall overboard.

I got out before they introduced the camo, but it appears to be a good idea in my mind. Being a nuke, underway you'd be wearing coveralls most of the time anyway, but in port it would have been dungarees. The last design really sucked. Missed the bell bottoms.
The Navy was also the only branch that you weren't allowed to stop anywhere off base in your working uniform. The Cammies seem to be a great compromise. You don't look like an auto mechanic, you can wear them off base like all the other services, and they do hide dirt grime and paint spots well. Frankly I'm jealous we didn't have them. |

They are FAR better than the shitty uniforms they replaced. We were not supposed go anywhere off base other than home or quick stops such as gas stations, etc with those stupid things. And we didn't look like we were in the military. We looked like mechanics. Another drawback to those uniforms was that if you got one tiny little fucking drop of paint on the things they were "unsat" to wear.

Although they stood up to hard work, I always felt fucking ridiculous wearing them. After that the "working uniform" I wore from 98' to when the NWU came out wasn't worth a shit for heavy use. The navy greens are nice. I think they actually have the best IR signature out of all the .mil uniforms if I'm not mistaken.

Wearing the type ones daily has kind of grown on me. I didn't mind my dungarees and hated the working uniform that followed them. ETA: At RIMPAC there was an Asian country (Sing?) that had blue cammies with outlines of ships as the pattern. It was interesting in a kid's pajamas kind of way. |

As a retired sailor. I like it as it was so much more comfortable than the old coveralls or dungarees. Even more so over the crappy wanna be a gyrene uniform. I bought a full set when they were authorized for purchase in the Jacksonville area even though I only had about 35 days till terminal leave.
As for falling over. It's damn near impossible to find someone now as it is. Even at night with the strobe on your cranial going off. |

Wore it for 2.5 years before I got out. I voted meh. Sailors don't really need camo, but id did do a better job of hiding small oil, grease and paint stains than utilities did, which I appreciated greatly, as I worked in the engine room. I wore the same two sets of NWUs for the 2.5 years, where as with utilities, I'd have to replace a set every 3-4 months due to stains.

Dungarees were comfortable, but the patch pockets sucked and if they got too much of a "fleet" look you'd be gigged and have to buy new ones. Who here has heard of having an "inspection ready working uniform?" What a ridiculous concept. Plus we all looked like extras from the Shawshank Redemption. The utilities were even worse and then I transitioned to a unit that wore BDU's and they were great. So a BDU cut uniform, no matter the pattern, is nautical miles better than the previous ones.

I liked the dungarees, but utilities felt stupid. The blue coveralls were my all time favorite and I wore them as much as humanly possible. The camo pattern stuff didn't get issued until after I got out, but I do remember laughing at the whole "Sea Warrior" concept they were trying to push at one time.
