I've long wondered what the soup sandwich shooting technique that the fellow who brought the FN 5.7 to take my CCW class was called. I've taught hundreds of CCW classes, and this guy came in already an "expert." Bad-mouthed my technique in my own class, giving me "suggestions" on my stance, grip, etc. Very much "that guy." Well, we come to the range portion of the class, and buddy pulls out his 5.7, takes his target, and he's such an expert that I figured I'd just tell him how many rounds he needs to put in the practice and test target, and we'd be good to go. I could focus on my other students, a mixed bag of blue-haired old ladies, younger couples, and the like, all shooting my .22 pistols. As I walk down the line, I see ol boy about whack himself in his shooting glasses with the slide shooting like the videos. Stop and watch him for a bit, and at 7 yards, my class "expert" is all over the fucking place. The 70 year old women in class are turning in softball sized groups in the center of the target and this guy has holes on every edge of the 24X45 inch B-27 target. He had to re-take the test after I unfucked his technique while the rest of the class waited, and that shamed him into shooting like a normal human being. He also ran out of 5.7 ammo so had to use a .22 target pistol. I approve of your teaching technique, but you might need to adjust your "Get the hell out of my classroom" just a little bit earlier. This fella was a walking, talking stereotype. From New York, knew it all and didn't need anyone to tell him how to shoot, just wanted to get the class in so he could carry. Stupid comment after stupid comment, but his eye-roll inducing questions and comments served as pretty good teaching moments for the class. There were many times in that class where the phrase "well, that's one way to go about it, but here's why I teach ______ this way, and you have to decide what's going to work for you" passed my lips. Teaching CCW classes to the unwashed masses is not something that you do for very long before you run into "that guy." |

I don't know about the technique, but it looks really fresh on screen. Love how many times he shot the guys and made more of a attempt than other action movies to keep them down. Reeves is supposedly pretty pro gun from an interview I read about Street Kings, which had some good gunfights too.

I love how bad guy is still on his feet, but waits for wick to finish his reload before he charges him. C.A.R seems like just a fancy name for shooting from retention.

Some of the advanced TFTT shooting classes have a performance standard that, if met, awards you the "level III" certification and... a black t-shirt. It show that you didn't just complete the class, but you can shoot, too. Using it to tout your creds as a "trainer" is a bit much. TFTT does not open their training to the general public, so I guess there's a market for people purporting offering second degree "CBA" authority. |

I searched their site before posting that and didn't see any reference to a black shirt. OK. Too bad I'm not professional enough. And yes I googled black shirt graduate and got a bunch of black T-shirt ads. It may be a sign of decent shooting skill but it doesn't quite have the same name recognition as Six Sigma. |

The problem is that the CAR disciples think it's great for any distance in any circumstance. |

I am finally able to watch the clip in the OP, I see nothing in that scene that is uniquely "Center Axis Relock." During the the two brief snippets of a canted close hold that might have came close, I did not see him going to his left eye to aim. Some of the shooting from a lower position of retention was done very differently from the stuff in those CAR videos - note the one handed shooting so the non shooting hand could contend with the threat at contact range, and then the aiming well away from the other arm to not risk a booboo. Some of the non-Hollywood stuff was solid, makes me wonder where he trained.

Oh look, Gun Kata 2.0
There is nothing this offers that is in any way superior to a mix of firing from Retention (step 2), Close Isosceles (step 3) and Isosceles (step 4). All of which are part of a correct draw, as has been taught for thirty years. Hell, replace Isosceles with Modified-whatever or Weaver for all I care. Still better than Gun Kata. Mainly because they are... You know... Actual techniques... |

Watched that movie "John Wick" and it had some great action scenes. I noticed the main character using some Center Axis Relock shooting techniques and it's peaked my curiosity. I've heard of it before and seen it with the video game "Splinter Cell," but I've never taken it seriously at all. Has anyone here taken a Center Axis Relock course? If so, what was your opinion of it and did you take anything useful away from it? I don't think I'd adopt every aspect of the doctrine, but was wondering whether a few things they teach might be useful. Here is one of the scenes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnPagmeLm-g View Quote I believe Mr. Reeves is left handed. That may explain the right hand/left eye issue. Didn't really look like CAR that much. Definitely like the strike to the throat with the business end of the pistol. |
