What is the appeal? I understood the benefits of 5.45 because of how cheap 7n6 was, but steel case .223 and steel case 7.62x39 are within 2 CPR of each other.
Apparently there are magazine reliability issues (of course this could be resolved by using a LAR-47 or MGI lower), from my understanding reloading for 7.62x39 is more difficult than reloading for 5.56, and even with the longer sight radius provided by an AR15 with irons as opposed to an AK the round itself is not as accurate as 5.56. The only potential positive I see to having an AR in 7.62x39 is having a familiar platform with high parts interchangeability available to shoot 7.62x39 in a SHTFantasy situation (which is still unrealistic since the Russians and Chinese have adopted newer calibers in their main battle rifles). Are there any realistic advantages in owning a 7.62x39 AR? |

7.62x39 is way cheaper and a 100FPS hotter then .300BO and it can be loaded subsonic just as easy if need be. Other than that i cant think of anything.

... Are there any realistic advantages in owning a 7.62x39 AR? View Quote It gave me an AR (my favorite rifle platform, hands down) in a better caliber than .223 for hunting deer here (small whitetail, short distances) long before other larger-caliber ARs became so common. I shaved the FS on a Colt 20" FT 7.62x39mm upper and it was surprisingly accurate with traditional glass on it. But, being honest, I only used it a few times going after deer, then went back my old lever guns. Did the same again years later when I built a 6.8 AR for the very same reason. For some reason (habit, nostalgia, etc.), I always go back to a .30-30 like I grew up with eventually. Sold the 20" to a friend who hunts a lot more than I do, and he loves it. I still have 2 carbines in that caliber (old Colt 16" uppers), but they are more of a "just because" thing. I have a bunch of ARs in a bunch of different chamberings, and I like the oddballs for some reason. FWIW, they both work fine with the old original Frankenmags and the later CP/ASC mags, as well as the one Chinese drum I was able to come up with (from the EE here years ago, IIRC). So I honestly can't make a very good case for "need"... but "want" has always been enough for me. YMMV. (Oh, and I have several other rifles in that caliber, so it isn't like I keep it on hand just for those carbines... heck, I can't tell you the last time either one was even fired. ) |

For the same ballistics with better reliability, 300 Blk is a much better (albeit more expensive per round) option than 762x39 in an AR platform.

AK and 7.62x39 guy here but in an AR-15 you'd be stupid to try to shoot 7.62x39 through one when you could simply use 300 aac.

To get the true parts commonality that's such an advantage for the AR pattern, you have to give up feeding reliability. If you want the ballistics, go 6.8 or 300blk. |

View Quote For those who reload, or those who don't insist on large stockpiles of ammo, maybe. For me, .300 makes far less sense than 7.62x39mm. (Or .308, for that matter.) But I don't reload and commonality of calibers is a huge deal to me, and it isn't for everyone... in fact, I'm probably well in the minority on that issue. If .300 ever becomes more widely available in bulk and comes down in price, I'm sure I'll be tempted to try it. Ain't there yet. |

I have one.
Range trips are too few and far between, so I haven't put many rounds through it. I have not seen .300 Blackout ammo for sale at Walmart. No 6.8 SPC, no 6.5 Grendel either. But I have seen plenty of 7.62X39 ammo for sale. Plus, I am in Illinois, so without a suppressor, there isn't much appeal to .300 Blackout, for me. Your mileage may vary. |
|
The only reason I can see is if you were gonna add an AR to your collection of AKs, SKSs, and Mini-30s. Other than having a lot already invested in 7.62 x 39, I can't see any reason to start out with one, especially when .300 Blk is so readily available.
For reloading, it's just as senseless, b/c the 7.62 uses a .310" bullet instead of the .308" common to .300 Blk and most other .30 cal rounds (to say nothing of other issues, like Berdan primers). |

I'm thinking of one of the lowers that uses AK mags, but since there's no hold open feature, a side-charging handle upper would make more sense than the ordinary T handle. Right...? |

More powerful than 5.56. More available and cheaper than .300 and 6.8. Cheaper than .308. Some states prohibit deer hunting with .223.

But I have ARs in a bunch of different chamberings that are shot less frequently, and I think 7.62 fits nicely in the mix whether you think it "makes sense" or not. The main rifle rounds I have stacked deep are 5.56, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, and 7.62x 51. I have ARs in all four and AKs in three of them, as well as other rifles in each. The only rifles I have that are not in one of those calibers are my rimfires, lever-actions, M1s and M1Cs, and a lone .50B (or the PCCs). I keep a good amount of ammo on hand for all but the Beowulf, but nothing like what I keep for the four primary rounds. And I used to have stuff all over the map, but spent years eliminating most odd rounds and streamlining it to those four. I did similarly with handgun calibers, more so in fact, and for the same reasons. Zero regrets, personally, but I realize it ain't for everyone. |

No advantage in threat incapacitation. And sure it's cheaper to shoot... if you shoot garbage ammo. AKs are designed to run on garbage ammo... ARs aren't. Other than sitting on a boatload of 7.62X39 or just wanting something different, there really isn't a good reason to do a 7.62X39 AR. |

I have one and use it with 5 and 10 round mags only to deer hunt with. It makes a great medium range medium game platform. The lower cap mags are completely reliable. Of course I use usa made hunting ammo for that purpose. I have hunted with the 556 as well but have more confidence in the 7.62 for reliably leaving an exit wound. It works great for me. I find the terminal performance to be on par with that of the 30-30 150 grain load which is perfect deer medicine.
