But a ridiculously expensive and overcomplicated solution to a very, very minor problem.

Could be cool tech for a small digital camera (like a point-n-shoot, or a cell phone) where you want a true optical zoom without a big telephoto lens.  Would really have to shrink it down though.
 



ETA:  Although it still doesn't really look much smaller than a normal scope - you'd have to get a lot more flexibility with those lenses to make up for it.
