The Pentagon on Friday reported the first death of a U.S. soldier in Iraq in its new mission to combat Islamic State militants who have seized large areas of Iraq and Syria.

Marine Lance Corporal Sean Neal, a 19-year-old old from California, died in Baghdad on Thursday in what a Pentagon statement described as a non-combat incident. Further details about how Neal died were not immediately available.

Earlier this month, a U.S. Marine was deemed lost at sea after he fell from an aircraft into the Arabian Gulf.

NTC often loses one Soldier a rotation.  Heavy equipment, lack of sleep and operating at night is a recipe for accidents, and those accidents are very often fatal.

Yep. Rollovers in steep wadis, dust storms, and ridiculous temperature fluctuations. Even simple things like a slamming drivers hatch on a 113 caused a severe neck injury on one of my rotations.

There are rumors that the U.S. government maintains an embassy there.  Don't quote me on that.

Fun fact.... There are around 1,000 troops in Baghdad.

Iran has a few, mainly protection for a general who is advising. The rest of the Iranians in Iraq are in the north fighting with the Kurds/ wondering where in the blue fuck Turkey is at.

Turkey for the longest time, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, was extremely anti-fundamentalist. Lately that has started to change. I guess they're beginning to forget the lessons of World War I. I forget the specific details, but it has a lot to do with who is in their current government.

i.e. the moderates became a minority if not pushed out.
