Need a semi auto rifle for brush hunting. Any suggestions?
.308 450 Bushy |
243 plenty of them in the AR and other platforms and the tried and true 30-06 the 7.62x39mm is a good brush round by the way what type of brush are you hunting.
How many rounds do you think you will need to get off at once . a Gatling gun in 45-70 if you need a lot of firepower.
.50 Beowulf is an impressive round |
450 Bushmaster.
45-70 guide gun if you feel comfortable with a lever. 44 mag and 454 casull are also formidable in the shorter lever actions |
AR10, 14.5 inch bbl, pinned A2 flash hider.
7.62 x 51 NATO, should take care of any brush problems.
Had great luck with my HK M1S90... Killed more shit quickly than I ever did with a rifle in the bush.
AK or a super expensive AR variant, mini-30? |
458 socom, best of the big bore AR's
45/70 performance in an AR15 |

M1 Carbine. Its a bit small, but i think it would work perfect. My uncle took his best deer with one. Im gonna take my m1 carbine and garand out this deer season.

Hunting in brush can also scratch and mar your gun, so I wouldn't choose anything too fancy or pricey.
I suggest a .44mag. out of a carbine bbl, you can get a 240 grain jsp going over 1800 fps. |
If your hunting 4 leg-ed animals I suggest the remington 7400 It worked for me.I now use a ruger 44 mag auto works good on whitetail and boar up close.
I use a 458 socom 14.5" for bear hunting in thick Alaska brush.
ETA - AR that is |
Short range with a decent round? SKS.
It's not combat with multiple enemy. Brush hunting normally does not need an optic or crap hanging off the gun. Unless you're wealthy and just want to show off. |
HK sl7 is what you are looking for. 10 shot semi auto in .308 the size of a SKS.
I'll second the Remington 7600 (or 7400 if you want to pump) I have a friend who he and his dad have hunted with those series of rifles all their lives, taken MANY deer with them. I believe theirs are 30-06.

Remington 7400 carbine in 30-06. 18" barrel. A lot of people up here use them. Mine wears a low mounted Leupold 2-7

Use a tight twist barrel and 300gn VLDs from a 16.5" barrel and re engineered and re calibrated sights, and an aim point with the appropriate zero who says a brush gun can't be accurate at 300yds The hard part is getting someone to make the barrel |

For some reason I have the desire to use a garand receiver as a starting point for building essentially a stretched M-14 in .300 WinMag or somesuch. |

Just get an AK--30rds of 154gr soft point is pretty formidable.

FN FNAR? Have one and so far so good. Survived a fall on a muddy river bank (with me on it), gaining some "character" (scratches), and then took a nice boar in it's first season of use (so far).

The 742 and 7400's are also known as the "jam-o-matic." I might would use it for a boat paddle but surely not if my life depended on it because of a bear or large animal near me in the brush.

My father in law hunted in the brush (WV mountains, Greenbrier County) for many years with a Rem. 742 in 30.06 with a Redfield 4X scope.
Before that it was a Rem. Model 81 in .35 Remington. No shots farther than 50 to 80 yds. and some less than that (he had a unique hunting style, in my experience). For that distance the 7.62X39 would be a good round. I'd take my SIG 556R with me if I was trying to do what he used to do. If they still make it in the new models, Remington used to make a carbine model of the 742. That short barreled M1A looks good, but you'd need to build up to carrying it. I deer hunted with my M1A and I never thought it was heavy. But, I was in my mid to late 20's and used hunting/walking before deer season came in and the M1A was only about 3 lbs. heavier than my shotgun, so it was no big deal. |

I would think about it differently. IMO... You need to define the range of projectile weight for the intended purpose ?
For me a brush gun means the best calliber suited for the least deflection at say 100 yards or less. Nothing less than 200 grains. Having said that plenty of people that hunt places like Alaska and Africa will tell you 200gr .338WM gets some pretty bad deflection also. So now we have arrived at a possible base minimum. Now. What is available from 200gr's up in a semi auto. A whole bunch of rounds ! Now at what cost and ease of acquisition. If you do not care about cost or how difficult the round is to acquire then .458 socom is hard not to consider. I would say next would be .450 Bushmaster. Both should perform the role well. .338WM, .338LM with the heaviest projectiles you have pretty good brush charisitcs however the bullet styles mostly associated are deflection magnets. Short, more blunt, rounded projectiles work better in mitigating deflection. If you accept lever and bolt guns then you have several other choices. |
