Male: Frank Sinatra - hands down no doubt about it greatest ever
Female: Rosemary Clooney in her heyday? Got raspy later. Modern: No contest - Jackie Evancho - an angel on earth walking among us |

Pavarotti
Roy Orbison Robert Plant Can't believe I didn't see Smokey Robinson on the list. For women, a whole bunch of Motown singers fit the bill. |

Steve Perry from Journey , and his replacement is almost as good.
Freddie Mercury. |

I like a lot of the ones already mentioned, but wanted to add Martina McBride. That woman has an amazing set of pipes.

Can't believe the name hasn't been mentioned yet... Luciano Pavarotti I know it isn't the most popular music, but the talent is way off the charts. Here's what he is most known for, his rendition of Nessun Dorma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8F-lenWkIo Link for non-embeds Seriously. Came to post this. Listen to Bjorling's effortless rendition. Almost unrecognizable from Pavarotti's straining to hit the infamous B4 and A4. Pavarotti did not think he deserved to be compared with the truly incomparable Bjorling. |

Sinatra was good, but one of the greatest ever? I don't think so. Musicians across all instruments study him as his phrasing is considered to be second to none (Miles Davis, too). Sinatra's range was only so so. He had power, but power isn't everything. A very good voice, but not one of the greatest voices ever. Bing Crosby > Sinatra, in terms of vocal talent/ability/timbre. Sinatra was known for his phrasing. also George Jones had a very unique voice. |

I just found this digging around you tube. Not saying she is the best or what ever but give this a listen. Skip to 1:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IChJ6eO3k48 Holy off key Batman! Massive fail. The music was bad. |

View Quote Um, yeah. This. I'm a big fan of hers. I loved Dead Can Dance, except when that guy would sing. Lisa has some pipes on her, and amazing control and a very surreal quality that makes her perfectly suited to provide very rich atmosphere for the many movies she's contributed to. |

One of the most ethereal and amazing female voices I've ever heard was Loreena McKennitt, I've seen her live and her voice was flawless... Also this. Be thankful you got to see her. From her website: We’ve had so many people in recent years ask why Loreena is not performing in the United States more frequently. Please be assured this is not due to any lack of interest or desire. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. We actually had a tour more or less built for the fall of 2013, but in the end had to abandon it. In recent years, there have been increasing government regulations surrounding immigration and taxation which have made it more and more onerous for Loreena to tour there. Every country has its own rules and conditions and the United States, along with a few other countries, have chosen to adopt some of the most challenging, especially when you get into large touring parties and supporting infrastructure. No doubt, this is one of the reasons so many artists have been recently appearing with few, if any, side musicians and crew. Thanks, Obama! |

Bill Withers
Curtis motherfuckin' mayfield Bobby McFerrin, the 'Don't Worry Be Happy' guy -- Seriously, Youtube his stuff. He has perfect pitch like Stevie Wonder and can do crazy things with his voice. Mel Torme - the velvet fog. He could hit intervals like McFerrin can. Amy Winehouse. Freddie Mercury. Old friend of mine heard Steve Perry sing for some fans at an ice house he worked at in Alabama. Says his voice was so loud at close range that he immediately put his fingers in his ears. Mike Patton, when he chooses to sing normal. All ate up with the crazy. Ella Fitzgerald. Louis Armstrong - Some folks hate the sound of his voice, but his pitch and tone were perfect, and the gravel gives it timbral character. Michael Jackson. There are so many good examples that I get pissed that I can't sing in key. EDIT: McFerrin example If someone likes that, please embed it for me. It's freaking awesome. He has this theory that the pentatonic scale is hardwired into our brains, and anyone, anywhere can figure out what note should be next in a scale. He did a ted talk on it. EDIT2: Bobby Mcferrin sings Ave Maria. This one is better IMHO. FF to 2:05 for the amazement. |

Lots of good ones mention in this thread. Freddy Mercury, Roy Orbinson, Iggy Pop, Glenn Danzig.
I have a few, but you've possibly seen my posts and know who they are. You likely disagree. |

Chris Cornell is up there but to put him there I think Eddie Vedder deserves a spot as well. James Morrison is up there amazing voice and he's still really young. Ray Lamontagne makes you feel like he's living at that moment whatever it is he's singing about. He's a weird dude though, maybe that's what makes him so good.

Damn!! Not bad!! It was a thing in the 80s and early 90s. British chicks with rockin' voices. Ethereal I think is what it was called. Lots of studio work with the instruments but the vocals were pure. Cocteau Twins was another. Sundays were a commercial version that did well. |

Heard this guy sing karaoke once whose voice was a cross between Fergie and Jesus.
