As always, open the images in a new browser to see the "big picture".

Why not just land?

One of the coolest things I watched in the Navy was a nighttime hot pump thru PVS-7's. The amount of static electricity coming off that bird is amazing.

I'm guessing this is for when the sea state is such that a hot refueling on the helipad is next to impossible.....

Still gonna be pretty ballsy for the guys to be on the fantail with the deck pitching and rolling, standing in THAT wind, with rotor wash above you, trying to hook up a hose to a winch, so the aircraft can pull it up, and then refuel....

I'm also guessing there's an "INTERNAL" refueling port on that helo???

DAMN.....

That was my first thought. Guess heavy seas could make it tough.

You don't just land the helo and fuel it. Ship's motion makes the rotor do some interesting things. If the seas are heavy enough they use a system that basically winches the helo out of the sky onto the deck. This isn't a great video but you can see the cable pulling the help down towards the end. Much easier and faster to pass a fuel line up to the bird.

Oh yeah, that does make sense.

I'm used to my landing sites not being mobile, after all.

V-22 has HIFR, but I've not seen the receptacle installed. Rotor wash would be brutal, I think.

Video of the HIFR.

It's the short wheelbase model.

That (RAST) was a Canadian invention... they called it a Beartrap.  (Just mentioned because we're being extra nice to our friends in the GWN the last couple days).
