Why did they not do this?
Why did they have some desk jockey on the most important duty? |

View Quote One reason might have been because they had a limited amount of ammo, and attacks don't necessarily unfold as anticipated. So they had to have their ammo flexible and mobile, to ebb and flow with the attack. Since the interpreter wasn't a combat soldier, he was the best choice to be ammo runner. ...just a guess. |

Because no one imagined that the movie would get analyzed over and over again for the next 100 years.

They did split the ammo, Upham was ammo bitch. He was supposed to flex to whichever gun needed the leftover ammo most. It's a pretty standard technique.
There's a lot wrong with saving private ryan, tactically, but that's barely even on the list. And I love that movie. |

Just in case a self-propelled sends an HE round into one of them

My opinion as well. They didn't know for sure what outer positions would fold first, so they kept a large amount in the center to move where needed. |

The way I understood it, the MGs were supposed to displace to other positions as well. Maybe it was easier to pick up and leave without the extra ammo. Runner could meet them at preselected positions.

The scene that stuck with me was the German almost comforting the American as he sank the knife into his heart.

View Quote What I recently noticed that was that after the German kills Mellish, he walks down the stairs where Upham is. But there's no body there from when Mellish & the 101st guy shot the Thompson through the door 3 minutes before and you hear the thud. |

Toting over 400 rounds AND the gun is a stone-cold bitch......ask me how I know. |

A more important question is... why didn't the sniper take out the German MG team at the radar site instead of the frontal assault without supporting fires? That shit was fucking stupid.
|

if the tank would have turned down main st instead of martin luther king blvd the machine guns would have to reposition - upham would bring the ammo there

Toting over 400 rounds AND the gun is a stone-cold bitch......ask me how I know. This, OP should remember that the first MG was forced to displace fairly early on in the battle due to the tiger. Had they split all the ammo evenly from the get go between the ground gun and the one in the tower. The MG on the ground would have assuredly been taken out or loss all it's ammo making it useless. It seems that they knew they would have to move the MG after the initial ambush, as the Germans would fold around on the flanks, just as they did. Upham being pussy is what got them killed, not bad distribution of ammunition. |

A good read on questions always asked.
http://www.scruffles.net/spielberg/movies/spr6.html Why didn’t Mellish keep all the ammunition with him instead of leaving it with Upham? The defense plan called for Mellish and Henderson to fire and displace or "shoot and scoot.” Mellish mentioned to Upham that they would be fallin back like crazy. Despite its name, a light machine gun and all its accessories isn’t all that light. The last thing Mellish and Henderson wanted to be burdened with while they’re bugging out is extra ammunition. It made sense to keep it at a rearward location and have Upham distribute it as needed. |

I'm not defending Upham's cowardice per se, but I find it funny that people flip out about him freaking out for a minute when you see lots of other soldiers having weak moments that lead to the death of their brothers throughout the film.
War sucks, folks. When you're in it, you'll have moments of bravery and moments of hesitation. He wasn't meant to be there, but in the end he wacked the right kraut.

We can't have a saving private Ryan thread with out 75% of the post being about Upham or that the movie sucked. |

Seems like a better utilization of troops. However,....It was a movie...... |

Because they were trying to get Matt Damon killed by sacrificing themselves to save us all from his future movies.
